America, love it or leave it - Betet Merta

“My head look like condom,” says Betet Merta. The diminutive Balinese surfer is clad in rubber from head to toe, including a tight-fitting neoprene hood that makes his dome look like something on the back of a Durex box. Betet does not look comfortable under all that thick rubber. We are about to go surfing at a sharky spot on the rugged coast between San Francisco and Santa Cruz – if Betet doesn't back out when his toes feel the icy water.

On this January morning the water temperature is a prickly 11 degrees Celsius, but it feels more like 7 or 8 °C with the wind chill from the brisk offshores. Betet hasn't surfed since leaving Bali in late October. For weeks he's been stationed at the mall in Petaluma, California, helping his wife at her store and taking care of their newborn daughter, Hannah. From Petaluma it's an hour-drive to the nearest beach, and two hours to any decent waves. Betet's been calling me incessantly about going surfing. “When can we go to Santa Cruz?” he says. “I miss the ocean. I need to surf.”

Now we are finally at the beach and the waves are looking pretty damn good. Bowly, overhead rights are winding down an offshore reef surrounded by large strands of floating bull kelp. But as soon as we get our feet wet, Betet starts to fidget and looks anxious. We paddle out. Halfway out to the break, I look back and see Betet floundering on the inside. He's lying on his board, staring down at the water. He looks like he's about to puke. He turns to me and gives the international sign for surrender. “No way!” he shouts, shaking his head. “Too cold!”

When a five-wave set comes cracking down the reef and into the channel, Betet's wave lust takes over and he powers out to the lineup. We last about 25 minutes, at which point we can't feel our hands or feet and can barely stand up. We retreat to the warmth of the car. Three waves, that's all we have to show for our long drive down the coast. It still beats a day at the mall. Driving back north, Betet presses his hands to the car's heater vents, and we discuss his ongoing love-hate relationship with America.

We just went surfing north of Santa Cruz and you almost passed out from the cold. What's the worst thing about surfing in cold water?

I hate the cold water. The wave today was so fun, but I can't feel my feet on my board.

Why don't you wear booties?

I can't wear booties. I never wear them.

How long can you stay out in water that cold before you feel like you're gonna die?

I don't know, today after 25 minutes I'm already done. After just three waves I can't feel my feet. On my last wave I'm like, oh my god, where is my feet! It's not worth it for me. I can't live here. Santa Cruz has a lot of good waves. It's almost like Bali, everywhere you go good wave. But the water is just too cold.

Maverick's is just thirty minutes north from here. Any interest?

Fuck that. Those guys are crazy. I can't surf three-foot wave in cold water, how can I surf a 20-foot wave in freezing water. That's so heavy. I wish I can do that. Then maybe I can live here.

What's your favorite thing about America?

Obama. I love Obama. I'm just pissed at him because he never call me when he come to Bali. I wanna hang out with him, but he don't call me. Last time he was in Bali, I saw his plane – what's it called?

You mean Air Force One?

Yeah, Air Force One. I was surfing Serangan with Benji (Weatherly), and we saw his plane, and we started yelling, Obamaaaa! But he didn't hear me (laughing).

Ok, what's the worst thing about America?

Everything is so far away here. You wanna go surf that wave? Far. You wanna go to that place? Far. You wanna go see your friends? Far. And you have to drive in the car and find parking. Sometimes you have to pay like $20 for parking. In Bali you can jump on the bike and get there quick, and park wherever.

Have you been to the East Coast of America?

Where's East Coast? Oakland?

No, like New York.

Not yet. I really want to go to New York. If I have money, I want to go there for sure. That's my dream.

What do you think of Petaluma, your wife's hometown?

It's pretty mellow. The town is pretty small, almost like Kuta. I like that. But sometimes it can get really boring.

What is the biggest difference between America and Bali?

Here the roads so big, the car so big. The internet is really fast. Whatever you want to download, it's so good. At my wife's house we have really fast internet. That's all I've been doing here is staying home and watching surf movies on YouTube and watching webcast of surf contest like the Pipe Masters.

What do you miss most about home when you are away?

I just miss surfing. In Bali you're in shorts and the waves are better. The waves can be good here, but the water is too cold. You don't have fun. In Bali there's more people on the beach, more chicks, it's just nice. I miss the beach lifestyle – warm water, surfing with all my friends. Bali is the best place to live. It's paradise.

What's the first thing you will do when you get home?

Go surf. I have three new boards from YU waiting for me right now. I can't wait to get home and wax them up, and paddle out in shorts, and surf some warm waves.

And no condom head.

Glen Hall Wins Hainan Classic in China Monday, January 16th, 2012

WANNING, Hainan Island, China (Saturday, January 14, 2012) – Despite smaller conditions on the final day of the competition at the Hainan Classic, the Final was an action-packed, wave-for-wave affair. Glenn ‘Micro’ Hall managed to take control early with a long, excellent-scoring wave mid-way through the heat and hold off Royden Bryson (ZAF) in order to be crowned the first-ever champion of the Hainan Classic, an ASP 4-Star Men’s World Tour event.
“China’s been amazing, I was honestly stoked to come here regardless of the contest, but to come here and have fun, uncrowded waves, was great. The first couple days were two-foot and fun then it got to four-foot and pumping and then it got bigger and it’s just been a good week,” said Hall, after his win, which is the highest-rated event win by an Irish surfer. “I’m pumped, it’s been the funnest week of surfing, so to have a win and a $15 000 cheque to go with it is amazing.”
Both surfers have been putting in countless hours over the last week getting to know the various waves around the contest area, and that experience proved vital on the final day of action of the inaugural Hainan Wanning Riyue Bay International Surfing Festival presented by Quiksilver.
Today, both finalists dedicated their morning to watching. Both were at the contest venue at first light to do research.
“I got here early trying to dissect it and find out which ones were actually the good ones,” Hall said. “I was up at 5:30, I didn’t even free-surf; I figured today would be a lot different, so I just sat and watched.”
In the first semifinal of the morning, Hall was up against Dion Atkinson (AUS), the powerful regular-stance surfer. Atkinson actually was the one to get off to the fast start, registering an 8.33, but he struggled to find an adequate back-up.
Hall kept active, posting a 6.9 to close the gap, before stroking into one of the best set waves f the heat. After two big floaters and couple turns the wave came through at an 8.17 and sent forced the Australian to scramble. Atkinson’s wave in the dying moments of the heat wouldn’t be enough.
In the second semifinal, Bryson managed to advance past Marc Lacomare (FRA), who’s been one of the top-performing competitors in the two-event Surfing Festival. The South African was on the choice waves of the heat and tallied the highest total heat score of the day, at 16.87.
In the final, Bryson wasn’t finding those same waves. It was Hall who kept most active and was finding the waves that lined-up all the way through the bay, allowing for multiple turns and maneuvers. Bryson did complete the trick of the heat, landing a perfectly executed double-grab air-reverse.
In the end, Bryson couldn’t find enough to out-point Hall, who was surfing fast and smooth on the waves of the heat, for a heat score of 16.33. Bryson had a few opportunities late in the heat, but couldn’t find the scoring-potential in the waves that remained. He finished the heat with a score of 16.16.
After the heat, at the water’s edge, a pair of Australians was able to pull Hall away from the mob of Chinese media and chaired him up the beach. Hall spends half of the year living and training in Australia.
“I’m stoked for Hally, he’s a good friend of mine, so I couldn’t have picked a better person to win the final, besides myself,” said Bryson, with a laugh. “All in all, I am just stoked to have come here; it’s an amazing place, and I cannot believe the quality of the waves. It’s a place I’ll definitely visit again in the future.”
After the final, at the Award Ceremony, Hall was presented with the $15,000 USD winner’s-check and the ornate jade dragon trophy.

Raditya Rondi Wins 6th Annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge in Malaysia

9 January 2012, Desaru - Malaysia: Current Asian Surfing Champion Raditya Rondi from Indonesia took the Men’s Open victory yesterday in the 6^th annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge at Desaru Beach in Malaysia, battling it out in a 25 minute challenge against Mohd Nazrin “Super Yen” from Malaysia, Abdullah Areef from the Maldives, and Gilang from Indonesia.

The surfing conditions on the final day lived up to the moniker of “mayhem” for the most part, with 3-4 foot waves closing out on the inside sandbars and rain squalls blowing in and out, but for the Men’s Open finals the conditions cleaned up and allowed thrilling finale to the three-day Monsoon Mayhem competition.

Rondi was all smiles back on the beach after the final, pleased to be starting the 2012 ASC tour season with a win. “This is my first time coming here to Desaru and it’s been lots of fun, so to take the win today just caps it off. It’s a great way to start off the year. We were really lucky that conditions got better in the finals, with the wind all but stopping so it got pretty good, which made it easier to find a couple of nice waves. It was also cool to see all the Malaysian crew again, as I really enjoy surfing with these guys here and the whole experience,” he said.

When asked about the significance of his win today Rondi replied, “Yes it’s great to win the first event of the season, but there are a lot of good surfers on the ASC tour now and there will be lots more events, so I’ll have to work hard and travel if I want to retain my title in 2012. But I’m going to do my best, and this is a great start!”

Abdullah Areef from the Maldives was satisfied with his third place finish, saying “I’m glad I got into the finals, so I can go back home with a trophy. The waves got much cleaner for the final, which made for a great ending. I’ve really enjoyed the event, and I want to do a lot more ASC events this year for sure, that’s my plan for 2012.”

The Asian Surfing Championship tour is just starting its second season, after having sanctioned a total of 9 events held in four countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand in 2011. The Monsoon Mayhem is the first event of 2012 season.

The Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge took place on the golden sands of Desaru Beach, located an hours drive east of Johor Baru and approximately 1.5 hours by car from Singapore.

During the three days of the event, the surfing action included the Men’s Open Division, Women’s Division, Masters (over 35 years of age) Division, and a Bodyboard Division, with over 80 participants coming from Australia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, the Maldives, Singapore, and of course Malaysia.

In addition to the surfing, there was also a skateboarding Slide Jam competition held on a hill just behind the Lotus Desaru Beach Resort followed by a DJ party at the hotel, giving the attendees a full weekend of fun activities.

To close the event at the awards presentation on the beach on Sunday afternoon, the Director of the Malaysia Tourism Ministry in Johor, Mr. Mohamad Isa Bin Abdul Halim took to the podium and said, “I first want to thank all the surfers from around the world that came to participate in the event, and all the governmental agencies that came together to support it to make it happen. We really hope that next year you all will come back again, as we hope to make an even bigger and better event for you. So thanks again everyone, and have a safe journey back to your home countries. See you again next year!”

Nazir “Ajill” Salleh from Bigfoot Industries was very pleased with how the event all came together, saying, “We’re very happy with the great turnout this year, and next year we plan to make it even bigger and better, hopefully with more prize money for the contestants. It’s been gratifying to see the event grow from just a couple of small tents on the beach and a dozen surfers, to having the ASC come and help us run the event and draw dozens of surfers from other countries. We had over 80 contestants from 7 countries here this year, and I’m sure next year we’ll top that. We feel honored that they all came to our event, as this isn’t exactly a dream wave that everybody is frothing to surf, so it’s the spirit and stoke of surfing and competing that is so good to see. So I thank all the surfers, my Bigfoot team, the government and the sponsors, and the ASC for making it such a great event.”

History is Made as Asian Surfing Champions for 2011 are Crowned in Singapore

18 December 2011 – Singapore: The inaugural Asian Surfing Championships Awards were held on Saturday evening December 17^th at the Wave House on Sentosa Island in Singapore to honor the Asian region’s first professional surfing champions, Singapore’s surfing champions, and to celebrate the media partnership of the ASC with the Outdoor Channel for 2012. The event was attended by over 100 members of the Asian surfing community and various media.

It was a historical landmark in the progression of Asian surfing, as it was the first time that Asian surfing champions have been crowned as a result of competing in a multi-country and multi-event professional surfing competition circuit. The 2011 Asian Surfing Championship circuit saw a total of 9 events held in four countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand.

22-year-old Made Raditya Rondi from Bali Indonesia took top honors as the champion in the Open Division, having won the Quiksilver Thailand Surf Competition in Phuket last September, the Rip Curl Surf & Music Festival in Bali in October, and just last week the Billabong Cherating Pro in Malaysia. He is also the runner up on the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship tour for 2011.

The significance of what he had achieved was evident in his acceptance speech, as he said, “Thank you very much for this award, as this is one of the biggest honors of my life so far, and I’ll always remember this. I want to say thanks to my sponsor Billabong and the ISC and ASC crews for making this all happen, and I hope that next year surfing can grow in Asia so we can make more contests. Should be lots of fun…thank you!”

Unfortunately 2011 ASC Longboard Champion Arip Nur Hidayat from West Java Indonesia was not present to receive his award, as he was attending his brother’s wedding, but he was acknowledged in absentia with a around of applause. Hidayat is also the 2011 Indonesian Longboard Champion.

In the Women’s Division it was Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea from Sumatra Indonesia who received the ASC Women’s Champion award, having competed in all six women’s events and having won three of them. She thanked her sponsor Billabong, her family, the Asian surfing community and the ASC for their support in making it possible for her to be able to surf and to win this award. Gea is also 4-time and current Indonesian Women’s Champion.

Decha Sithidej is now Thailand’s first surfing champion, having won the Master’s Division (over 35 years of age) of the Asian Surfing Championships. It has only been in the last several years that Thailand has been recognized as having a surfing community, and it has grown rapidly as a result. In his acceptance speech, Sithidej was liberal in his praise of the ASC for their support of surfing in Thailand, saying “Thanks to Tipi Jabrik and Tim Hain at the ASC for helping and supporting us in Thailand, without them this wouldn’t be possible. Also big thanks to the crew at Quiksilver Thailand and to Joob at Surfing Thailand for their dedication and support. This award is only possible because of all of you, and I’m so proud to represent Thailand as the first surfing champion.”

After the ASC champions had been called up together on the stage for a group photo, ASC Media Director Tim Hain took the microphone and called on Mr. Kevin Sim from Multichannel Asia to receive a placard in appreciation of the ASC and Outdoor Channel agreement for 2012. By mid 2012, the Outdoor Channel will be broadcasting a series of programs that revolve around the ASC and its events, in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and other Asian countries.

“On behalf of Outdoor Channel, I would like to say that we’re very happy to be a partner with the first even Asian Surfing Championships, for next year and in the years to come” said Sim. “We believe it’s the perfect platform from which to inform and entertain both the mainstream and sports enthusiasts in the Asian region, bringing the exciting sport of surfing into the living rooms of millions of people.”

After Sim’s speech and a big round of applause, MC Nazir “Ajill” Sallah from Big Foot Industries and president of the Singapore Surfing Association made a surprise declaration…the announcement of Singapore’s surfing champions for 2011.

Receiving the Singapore Women’s Champion award was Cheryl Tang, who though taken by surprise delivered a heartfelt speech when asked by MC Sallah how she felt to be Singapore’s first woman surfing champion, especially given that there is no surf in Singapore. She replied, “I think that if there is a will there is a way. I’m really happy to see that surfing has grown so much in Asia, especially South East Asia, and I want to see more girls surfing in the current generation and the younger generation, and thanks to the ASC and the Outdoor Channel I know that’s going to happen. It’s been a long road but it’s a really good thing for Asian surfing."

Singapore’s Men’s Champion Nasri Banadhaj was all smiles as his name was announced, and from the podium said, “First of all I want to thank the Indonesians and the Malaysians for sharing their waves with us, as we don’t have any waves in Singapore, so thanks so much for that. And a big thanks to my crew of friends that has been surfing with me and supporting me for so many years!

With a final thanks to the attendees and the sponsors by MC Ajill, the formal part of the evening was over and then it was time for some entertainment at the Wave House Flowrider, where ASC Men’s champ Raditya Rondi and Women’s champ Bonne Gea tried their hand at surfing a different kind of wave than what the ocean can deliver. With a bit of coaching and hands-on help, they both succeeded in spending a few seconds on their feet in the Flowrider. “It’s way different than surfing for sure,” said Rondi. “I started to get the hang of it at the end and it was really fun…really different but really fun. When you fall its crazy, because you get swept away and rolled around so different than in the ocean, but it’s all good. With a bit more practice I’m sure I can get good at this!”

Billabong's Peter Thew and Wave House's Jeff Ranta as well as several other local experts jumped in to do a little demo to the crowd and show how it was supposed to be done. DJ music accompanied the performance and and soon the crowd was dancing to the beats...until long into the night.

The ASC Awards was held in conjunction with the B.Y.O.B (Bring Your Own Board) event that included a full day of Flowboarding, Skateboarding, Wake Surfing, Stand Up Paddling, BMX and Bodyboarding, followed by their awards presentation and a night of partying with top local bands and DJ’s.

20 December 2011, Bali-Indonesia: On Saturday evening December 17^th in a festive affair at the W Retreat & Spa in Seminyak that included an art exhibition, fashion show and after party, Quiksilver Indonesia proudly showed off their exclusive “Live the Life You Love” T-shirt collection designed by professional photographer, artist and DJ Gene Kreyd to a packed ballroom full of friends and representatives from the surf, fashion, music, art and media worlds.

The full evening of entertainment at the upscale venue began at just after 5:30 pm with free flow of drinks from Coca-Cola, Jim Beam and Heineken for the arriving guests, who mingled and viewed selections of Kreyd’s finest artwork as well as received a special music CD arranged and produced by the Russian born artist.

After the crowd was sufficiently warmed up by the generous libations, Quiksilver South Asia Marketing Executive Holly Monkman stepped up to the microphone for a welcoming speech and to announce the evening’s agenda, saying “Thanks everyone for coming and making this celebration so special for Quiksilver and for Gene. A big thanks also to the W Retreat & Spa staff for working with us to create such great setup in support of Gene’s art and music. Hope you enjoy the fashion show and the after party at the Woobar!”

Quiksilver South East Asia CEO Paul Hutson and guest of honor Gene Kreyd were then called up to the stage, where Hutson explained, “Quiksilver has a history of working with artists of Gene's caliber and we are excited to assist him in exposing his creations to the surfing world. It has been a pleasure working with Gene on this exclusive collection, as Gene's energy in the build up to this launch has been stimulating for all our team, and to top it off with this great party is amazing.”

Kreyd’s response was filled with emotion as he responded, “I’m totally stoked! This has been such a positive experience working with Quiksilver on this collection. Art and surf…the perfect combination. I’ve been involved with Quiksilver for years with video and photography, and now I’m so excited to be collaborating with them on launching this new line of T-shirts with my latest surf art. ‘Live the life you love’ has been my motto for most of my life, that’s how I live and that’s what I do, so that’s what this collection is all about….celebrating life! The shirts came out better than great, and judging by the reaction here tonight, it’s sure to be a huge success. Thanks to Quiksilver and everybody that had a part in it. Live the life you love!”

After a huge round of applause it was straight into the fashion show, where first up was the Lisa Blue swimwear line that featured super hot models and great props that had both the men and women cheering wildly, followed by a male model showing off his Moskova underwear and whipping the women into another level of froth. Then with the audience captivated and at full attention, several models including Quiksilver’s Indonesian surf star Dede Suryana paraded the new Live the Life You Love” T-shirt designs up and down the catwalk for the grand finale of the fashion show.

By this time it was 8:00 pm and time to start the Saturday night party, so the crowd moved over to the Woobar to finish up with DJ’s Maxim Gankin and Taro Joy cranking up the tunes til late into the night.

Russian film producer Blokhina Inna attended the event and was very complimentary, saying “This idea from Quiksilver and Gene have turned the unique art of Russia’s best surfer into a vibrant collection of T-shirts, and I’m sure there will be many Quiksilver and surfing fans that lining up to buy them. I am featuring Gene in a documentary movie about surfing that I’m doing called “One the Wave” that will premiere in April 2012, which will give his fans further insight on his art and his lifestyle.”

Wet and Wild Start on Day 1 of Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 in Malaysia

10 December 2011 – Cherating, Malaysia: The forecast for a new South China Sea swell to start off the Billabong Cherating Pro in Malaysia was delivered in full today , with smallish early morning conditions steadily giving way to very contestable 1 meter waves by mid day, but also bringing with it torrential rains and a brief thunder and lightning storm.

But none of this bothered the 70 men and women contestants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, the Maldives, Taiwan, France, Denmark, Australia, and Switzerland that arrived on the beach today to compete for cash, products, prestige, and fun in this 3 star Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned event, which is the 8^th and last stop on the 2011 ASC tour. They tackled the testing conditions head on through the entire day, without hesitation.

The Women’s Division competitors were the first to take to the water and get through their first round heats, with current rankings leader Yasnyiar Gea from Indonesia posting the highest scores of the round and the last ASC event winner Annissa Flynn from Thailand sending the message that she wants to end the year on a winning note by easily winning her heat to advance into the semifinals.

Then it was the Open Men’s Division getting out there and battle it out for their chance to be on the podium in tomorrow’s final, with the first two rounds being run in the pouring rain with a midway break for the 20 minute thunder and lighting storm that passed through. By the time Round 2 was completed it was high tide and 6 pm, so time to call it a day. Tomorrow will see Round 3 action beginning the day, with current ASC Open rankings leader Raditya Rondi from Indonesia leading off in Heat 1.

It is predicted that the swell will to continue to increase slightly for the completion of the event tomorrow, which will see winners crowned in the Men’s Open, Women’s, and Masters Divisions. The contestants were all told to be on standby at the beach at 7:30 am for a possible 8:00 am start.

Dede Suryana Wins Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event Surf Contest in Malaysia

5 December 2011, Terengganu-Malaysia: Indonesia’s Dede Suryana got the best of both the windy 3-4 foot windblown beachbreak conditions and his fellow finalists yesterday to win the Men’s Open Division of the Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event Surf Contest at Batu Burok Beach and nab the first place trophy and RM 2,500 ($US 850).

It was an all Indonesian affair with Suryana up against Quiksilver teammates Tipi Jabrik, Sandi Selamet, and Devis Ratif in the 25 minute final, with Suryana aggressively attacking the waves and dominating the lineup, posting the highest score of the day and of the final, a 7.1 (out of a possible 10), and the highest combined score of the day, 14.10 out of 20. Given the conditions, it was an especially amazing performance.

“I’m super stoked to win this event,” said Suryana. “It was great fun to be out there with my team mates, even though it was windy and not the best conditions in the final. The waves were pumping all morning, the best we’ve gotten so far in the contest, which made it really great to compete today. Then the wind came up and so it was harder to find the good sections, but luckily I did find a couple in the final and got some scores. It’s been a great three days here and the locals have all been so nice to me, so I want to thank them for sharing their place with us. Looking forward to coming back here next year for sure!”

Suryana is from West Java in Indonesia but resides in Bali when he isn’t traveling to compete on surf contests all around the world. He is currently the only Indonesian surfer competing on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series circuit.

The final day of the three day Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event started off with the South China Sea delivering solid 3-4 foot glassy bombs exploding on the sandbars of Batu Burok Beach and bright sunshine lighting up the sandy beach, a perfect setup for the completion of the event. The action started off at just before 9:30 am, and by just after 12:00 noon all that remained was the finals in each division. Unfortunately the wind had started to blow strongly with the threat of rain on the horizon as well, but after a short break for lunch it was straight into the finals with first the Women’s Division, followed by the Bodyboard Division, then the Master’s Division, and finally the Men’s Open Division.

In the Women’s Division it was 13 year old Annissa Flynn from Thailand who trumped the field of older girls to bring home her second win in as many weeks, having just won another surf contest in Hong Kong last weekend. When asked about her expectations on winning this event she replied, “I didn’t think I had a much of a chance to win because I’m the smallest and youngest of the girls, and with the conditions today it was really hard. But I’m so happy to have won this, really happy, and I’m very thankful to my dad and mom and to Quiksilver for supporting me, so I could come here and compete.”

Quiksilver pro surfer and special guest Ry Craike from Australia was delighted to be invited to come to Malaysia and attend the event. In addition to wowing the crowd each day with exhibition sessions where he showed off his electrifying high performance surfing, he also donated one of his surfboards as a prize to Adik Chik, Terengganu’s Most Promising Grommet (junior surfer). “I’m stoked I got to come to Malaysia and meet the local crew and hang out with all the surfers from the other countries like Indonesia, Thailand, and the Maldives, and we got some sick waves too. It’s great to see all these new local surfers so amped on surfing, and we got to give away a couple of surfboards, so I’m looking forward to coming back again next year to see how they will have progressed.”

In all, 97 contestants from 10 different countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Australia, the Maldives, Japan, Egypt, and the USA registered to compete either the Men’s Open Division, Women’s Division, Masters Division, or Bodyboard Division.

Quiksilver’s Holly Monkman was very pleased with the level of participation and how the event went, saying, “On behalf of Quikilver I want to thank all the international surfers for coming and supporting this event, and to especially thank Quiksilver Malaysia and Bryan Ng for putting together such a great event. It was very generous of them also to donate all the entry fees from the competitors, around 4,500 RM, to a local charity and I really commend them for that. We’re looking forward to coming back here again next year and hopefully we’ll see even more locals in the water. Quiksilver is very proud to be supporting the sport of surfing in SEA and growing the ASC tour with events like this.”

Though not widely known as a surfing destination, Malaysia’s east coast is rife with points and beach breaks that can offer up super fun and high performance waves when the South China Sea turns on its charm during the “Monsoon Season” months of October through March each year. This time of year is typically quiet along the coastal beaches for non-surfers, but for those surfers in search of uncrowded waves the “Surf Season” is welcomed with great anticipation.

Day 1 Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event

2 December 2011, Terengganu-Malaysia: The inaugural Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event Surf Contest 2011 got underway today at Batuk Burok Beach in the coastal town of Kuala Terengganu with big crowds showing up to check out the surfing action, play some games, participate in a surf clinic, and generally have an out-of-the-ordinary day at their local beach.

After the 97 contestants from 10 different countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Australia, the Maldives, Japan, Egypt, and the USA had registered themselves to compete either the Men’s Open Division, Women’s Division, Masters Division, or Bodyboard Division, the surfing action got started with the bodyboarders first taking to the 1-2 foot waves.

They surfed through 8 heats before taking a break for the traditional religious Muslim mid day Friday prayer time, and then the Women’s Division had their chance to paddle out and do battle in the testing low tide conditions. The highlights of the women’s surfing was first Indonesia’s Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea pulling off an amazing layback top turn to win her heat the day’s highest scoring wave, and then Thailand’s 13 year old Annissa Flynn getting her heat win and the second highest scoring wave of a 4.67.

“It was kind of hard out there,” said Annissa. “I was lucky to get a couple of good waves and win my heat, because the current was strong and it was difficult to stay in a good position. But I’m happy to get through this heat and advance, and I’m really looking forward to my next heat…after I get some rest tonight!”

Event organizer and Quiksilver Malaysia Surfing Ambassador Bryan Ng was nothing but pleased with the turnout on the first day of the event, saying “This event has become the talk of the town, and today everybody has been showing up today, both the public and the media, and I couldn’t be more happy about it. Surfing is very new to this town, as they have only been doing it for the last 3 to 4 years, so this is quite a big deal for the local population, to have some many international surfers coming to their beach and see so much activity. We are off to a great start and I’m grateful to Quiksilver and the ASC for all their help in makng this event a reality.”

ASC CEO Tipi Jabrik was also very happy with what he saw today. “The waves were certainly contestable today, good enough to start things off for sure, and we’re anticipating increasingly good conditions over the next two days. Everything was set up very well going great. I’m especially glad to see the local government give such great support to this event, and also to hear that the Maldives government sent several of their surfers here to compete. I hope that this sets an example that other countries will follow, sending their best surfers to other ASC events to help grow the sport of surfing throughout Asia.”

Tomorrow will see the Men’s Open and Master’s Division surfers take to the waves, as well as more fun games on the beach and an special expression session and poster signing by Quiksilver pro surfers Ry Craike from Australia and Dede Suryana from Indonesia.

Both surfers took the opportunity today to get a couple of waves, being towed behind a jet ski and attempting to outdo each other in trying to launch the biggest air. “The wind was super strong down by the jetty where we were surfing, which made it hard to land our aerials, but it was very good fun,” said Suryana. “I’m really looking forward to surfing in the competition tomorrow, and I’m having a great time here,” he added.

21 November 2011, Kuta-Bali: Quiksilver in cooperation with the State Government of Terengganu, the Tourism Ministry of Terengganu, Tourism Malaysia and EC Extreme is proud to announce the inaugural Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event Surf Contest 2011 that will be held from December 2-4^th at Batuk Burok Beach in the coastal town of Kuala Terengganu, approximately 5 hours by car or just a short 45 minute domestic flight away from Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia.

Surfers from all over South East Asia including Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, the Maldives, and the Philippines will be attending this 3-star Asian Surfing Championship event, which is stop number 7 of 8 events in the ASC’s inaugural 2011 season. Craike has gained a world-wide reputation for his fast and electrifying state-o-the-art surfing, and will be showing off to the lucky fans in several exhibition sessions during the contest as well as doing some exploring around the area, as there are over a dozen surf breaks scattered along the coastline within minutes of the city of Terengganu.

The Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event Surf Contest 2011 is a combined effort by Quiksilver and event organizer EC Xtreme, with funding and support from the State Government of Terengganu, the Ministry of Tourism Terengganu, Tourism Malaysia and other sponsors, to promote amateur and professional surfing as well as to increase tourism during the monsoon season.

TERENGGANU QUIKSILVER BEST EVENT SURF CONTEST 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, 1^st November – The Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event Surf Contest 2011, will take place in Batu Burok Beach, Kuala Terengganu from 2-4^th December 2011.

Surfers from all over South East Asia are expected to compete in 4 divisions which are Men’s Short-board Open, Women’s Short-board Open, Master Short-board Open and Body-board open) offering a total prize purse of over $10,000 USD (RM32,000). First to eighth places in each division will receive cash prizes from State Government of Terengganu, trophies and prize packs from Quiksilver & Roxy.

Being endorsed and supported by both government and public sector organizations, the Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event Surf Contest 2011 will provide local Malaysian surfers the opportunity to gain valuable experience competing at an International level, getting them familiarize with the rules and regulations of ASC sanctioned events and opening door to competing in ASC competitions held throughout South East Asia and the world.

The Terengganu Quiksilver Best Event Surf Contest 2011 takes place during what is typically called the “Low Season”, though surfers have long termed this period the “Surf Season”, and the event brings to light another activity which both locals and visitors can enjoy during the East Coast Monsoon, helping to further endorse Terengganu as a all-year-round holiday destination.

“We’re excited to bring this contest to Batu Burok for the first time this year”, said Catherine Chin, Director of Marketing, Quiksilver Malaysia. “The Best Event will be included as the ASC ranking system to encourage local surfers to surf with other Asian surfers”.

Surfers will be coming from Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, Philippines, Japan, Australia and Maldives to compete in these 3 days Best Event Contest. Ry Craike (Quiksilver Pro

Surfer) from Australia and Dede Suryana (Quiksilver Pro Surfer) from Indonesia will also be seen during the event for Expression Session (Demo).

Surfing the Concrete

Since the surfing monsoon ended last 2 weeks, we started our activity again this week. Rather than doing nothing living in the city, we decided to do Bowl Surfing every weekend morning.
We are doing Carving Skateboard & Longboard in Shah Alam SS13 Skatebowl Park. Most of us are quite new and just started to skate.... all we need is just safety gear and helmet.
Fyi, this is a very healthy activity and keep us staying in shape....finger crossed!!! heheheheehehe so if you guys want to bring your kids, your nephew,niece...cousins...anyone...just bring along!!!! Start staying healthy!!!
For a start, everyone should just drop by and try it out. Dont have to buy straight to be able to join us......can share and use ours for a start!!! So if u guys are keen to surf the concrete, feel free to join us every Sunday morning at;

Road Trip to M-Bay with TSC Surfing Crews

17th January - 20th January (5 days Journey to M-Bay)

Its gonna be about overhead swell on 17th Jan and i was looking forward to surf at M-Bay, Kuala Terengganu. It's been a while since i last surf this spot, so it's time to head up North East to hunt for the perfect right-hand waves.

My journey started from KL, hop on a bus to Kuala Terengganu directly. Normally there is few bus companies provide rides to Kuala Terengganu (S.P Bumi, Adik Beradik, Transnasional, etc etc) from Putra Bus Station, Kuala Lumpur. One way ticket to Kuala Terengganu will cost you about RM40. The journey will take a 6 hours directly from KL to K. Terengganu. I have no problems loading my 3 boards bag into the bottom luggage area. I was happy, finally the bus companies recognize our sport and surfing!!! Now, they know its a surfboard!!! YahOOoOOoo......

Sharp at 5am, i arrive at K.Terengganu bus station. It was a nice and comfortable sleep all the way and i'm still abit blur!!! I waited for a while before the Terengganu Surfing Crews arrive and pick me up.
It was me, Iddin, Gazi, Amar, Amir, Jan and Mamat doing the road trip together!!! We were all stoked!
Thanks alot guys to pick me up and my honor to do this trip with you guys!!

Half way through the journey, we stop by for the best breakfast at Kuala Terengganu. The infamous
Nasi Minyak, Nasi Dagang, Nasi Kerabu, Kuih Muihs for breakfast! It might not sound as healthy but it is hard to insist this type of food. They are simply delicious!!!

Upon arrival at M-Bay, all our heart was pounding and can't wait to see how good the waves was....
Jeng jeng jeng!!! It was so windy!!! The wind simply mess up the waves but we were still so stoked. It's been a really a long time since i came and surf this spot. I would say about 5 years ago, so its good to be back!! After chilling out at the spot (with no surfing), we decided to head back to Batu Buruk beach to surf beach break!

It was not too bad at Batu Buruk beach so we decided to surf!! It's abit rough but waves are overhead on every corner of the beach. Although it is rough, it was quite easy for us to access to the peak with the channel pulling us out directly. Waves after waves, i was pounded with Air Drop and wipe out after wipe out. Waves was really fast and each waves that I've choose is all fast Air Drop. I bet the all the TSC guys out on beach are actually laughing at how good is my wipe out sessions!!! Hahahahahahaha
We surf the whole day till we are tired!!! After dinner, the whole TSC surf crews joined by Ayen, Kit, Mood headed for KARAOKE sessions!!! After so much surf, we still have the strength to shout our lung out. It was fun!!!! Our crib for the nite was at Iddin's house! Thanks Iddin for the hospitality.

18th Jan suppose to be a better day as the wind start to drop and today some of the Cherating & KL crews will join us. We also have 3 newbies joining us to learn to surf at M-Bay. One of them are from Maldives and another 2 from K.Terengganu. Here we go, met up at Batu Buruk beach with Steven, Semmy, Am and Khalid....plus the 3 newbies. After greeting, we heads up M-Bay.

Today, waves at M-Bay are getting better but waves still affected by wind. But this time, we are able to surf and we are keen to teach the 3 newbies how to surf. So everyone get ready and head to surf!!!!
It was me, Iddin and Mamat started to teach the newbies the essence of surfing. Basic rules and methods of surfing. Unfortunately, the rip was too strong, we have to delay our Learn to Surf in the water. So without wasting time, i head to surf as well!!! WoHHhhoOooOOoo!!!!
It was 2 hours later before Mamat went out and started the surfing lesson again. Yea, they were stunned by how surfing is all about and how our surfing lifestyle evolve. The spirit of brotherhood!!! All of us share the same passion and love for surfing! Trying our best to introduce, promote, develop and unite surfing in Malaysia.

By 2pm, we headed back to Batu Buruk again to surf. This time, waves start to get better and without wasting time, all of us head in to surf!!! Surf till we drop by late evening. By nite, again we are all in for Karaoke!! Scream our heart out!! Later the nite, all 10 of us jammed pack into Iddin's house!! It was really comfortable and nice. Ice Cold Aircond with fan plus Astro as bonus!!!

19th January was the best day of the journey!! M-Bay was firing!! We arrive at 8:00am and i bet we were late! I can imagine how good the waves will be if we were in earlier. Without asking, all of us grab our boards and heads for surf. I was abit hesitated cos i wanted to take some pictures and video of the beautiful waves. It was overhead on set with perfect right-hander waves!!! Sorry guys, i just cant help myself and go in to surf instead. All the camera were in the car!! No one willing to be the camera man!!!!

It was barrel's after barrel's and wipe out after wipe out, yet everyone is so so stoked! No wind with clean and glassy barrels. I remember the moment when i took on a overhead set, perfectly set into the barrels and just enjoy the room view from inside!! The feeling was awesome!! Front side barrel after so so long!!! It's always C-Bay that we usually get backhand barrels but this time something for a change!!! For Semmy and some of the goofy footer, they are all so stoked to actually practise their backhand on a perfect waves!!! The waves start to get smaller as the tide gets lower and we were only manage 2 hours before the waves get smaller at shoulder height! Then, finally someone decided to go in to take some video!! Thanks IDDIN!!! hehehehehehehehe

By late afternoon again, we headed back to Batu Buruk to surf beach break!! Although it gets smaller but it was all fun at Batu Buruk beach as all the TSC surf crew came by and surf together. It was quite crowded at the beach...but with spectator!!! FUN FUN FUN!!!

By nite, it was time for us to visit Khairul and family. Khairul is one of the TSC surfer and he is the local surfer of (Belakang Sekolah Spot) near Marang. It was sad to hear that his dad was missing on Monday morning as their fishing boat sank while fishing. 2 members of the crew manage to float and swim back to shore after 8 hours since the boat sink. However, his dad didnt manage to reach to safety and he body was found after 2 days. All of us went to his house for prayers and we manage to collect some contributions and pass it to the family. Our condolences to Khairul and his family. To all the surf members who contributed, thank you!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Terengganu Surf Community Crews to actually spend time doing road trip and surfing together with us. Thank you Mahmood, Gazi, Amar, Amir, Ayen, Iddin, JC, Doje and others to accept us like brothers!! Steven, Semmy, Khalid, Am...im sure you feel the same and when is our next trip up to M-Bay? M-Bay Terengganu Firing- Claiming 1 board & 1 forehead

13th January 2011- The infamous right hander at Merang Terengganu a.k.a M-Bay is firing for the past few days with barrels down the line. Although this spot is not favorable by alot of goofy footer, somehow this is my all time favorite surf spot in Malaysia as it has perfect right hand waves!!!! If you are travelling from Kuala Lumpur to M-bay, it will take you about 5.5 hours drive. So this is not the spot for everyone.......

This shot was taken yesterday from one of the local K.T surfers. It is unbelievable how clean the waves is....although the wind is howling all over Cherating. Normally this spot works on mid-low tide when the wind is off shore or no wind.
With such a speed down the line.....barrels catching you up, u gotta have the experience to surf this spot. Many boards been claimed from this spot and many stitches as well. If you take off on a wrong waves, you might end up smashing on the wave barrier rock right in front of you......
2 days ago, this spot just claim another 15 stitches from our local surfer J.C (aka KIT) the father of KT surfing.......

Surfing Etiquette In The Water

During the last 2 months surfing in Cherating, C-Bay, Quarry, Kijal, KT, i notice alot of angry and disappointed surfers in the water. We are here to highlight the potential mistakes and misunderstanding. This is just our piece of thoughts, if any of you are not happy with it, dont get offended. I give you a classic example of Cherating beach as below;

- Too many beginners surfing at the main point. If you are a beginner, stay at the lower section of the spot. You have a better chance of getting a waves and having fun with it. If you stay at the main point, your chances of getting waves are very very low and you might get hurt if you are in the way of other surfer ridding the waves.

- Surfers dropping in.....this really pissed everyone off. Dont ever do this as this is very dangerous. IF someone already riding the waves, stop dreaming of catching the waves. Just paddle towards the waves, away from the surfer and wait for the next waves. Please DONT PRETEND you didnt see the surfer ridding the waves and dropping in on the surfer. No matter where you go, you will get the gnarly treatment if you drop in. I have seen surfers got bashed up in the water and out of the water when they drop in.....in alot of countries.

- If you are not a strong paddler, paddle far out! Dont paddle direct to the point as you might be in the way of the surfers that is ridding the waves. Remember, the more you paddle, the better surfer you are!! If you think you want to improve your surfing, improve your paddling too!!!

- Dont throw your board if a waves rolls on you. Your board might hit another surfer near by. Learn to duck dive, if u cant duck dive or dont know what is duck dive, practice it or dont stay at point!!!

- Pay Respect to Local Surfers!!! No matter how good or bad is your surfing skills, you can always afford a smile or a nod whenever you see a surfers. Whenever you first paddling into the ocean, you can just say hi or give a smile to show your respect. In return, im sure you will get back your respect.
I have seen recently a surfer got shouted and chased out of Cherating beach. Unfortunately, this guy is a good surfer but he have no respect and very selfish. He almost knock his board on kids several times, thus we find him a very dangerous surfer. If he ever do again, we will make sure he will never surf in our beach again!!!

- Know your surfing rules before you start surfing!!! Get a surf lessons!!

- I have seen many fresh starter surfing with small boards. GUYS or GIRLS, get the right board!!! Dont listen to your friends if his surfing level is average only. If you use the wrong board, you will only struggle to surf and ended giving up surfing!!! I know longboard is heavy and big to carry but for a beginner that is the best bet. You will have fun ridding the waves with it. I know it is more style to carry small boards on land, but we will only see you struggling in the water. heheheheehhehehe

- As everyone knows, surfing is booming in Malaysia and everyone is keen to learn to surf. We are very happy to introduce surfing and seeing surfing in Malaysia move to the next level...We are proud to share the waves but again, please learn your way up. If you are not sure, can always ask....its free!!! We dont charge you for any questions!!! Feel free.....

P/S- All it takes is just 3 fins on top of your head or your body. This cut is deep enough to rip your skin apart and sent you to hospital. Or even the board hitting your eyes!! So please, learn the basics and enjoy the ride. Don’t let your fun be your enemy.

Surfing in Kudat, East Malaysia

This is the northern part of Sabah, East Malaysia. Couple of KK surfers head down to Kudat, Sabah to check out the surf point and it turn out to be so good. Im just wondering how often they get swell as they are right on the tip of the Sabah. They should be getting most of the swell/typhoon from Phillipines!!!!!!!! So here you guys, some of the pics taken by East Coast surfer (Charles).

Busy Weekend at East Coast 27-2nd January 2011

Again we are bringing you another waves forecast for the year end of 2010. Hope everyone having a big fun surfing in Malaysia. If any of you is wondering how is the waves forecast for this weekend...ermm i would say that Santa was late this year. From 27th Dec to 2nd January, we will getting some good swell for the entire week. So for those who want to clear the annual holiday, this is the best time!!!!

Today Surf Check (27th December) at:

Chendor - Waves was head height n glassy in the early morning. Only few local crews ridding the smoothies!!! Waves didnt work in the afternoon as the wind kicks in. This is the place to be when the swell kicks in!!! But again, this spot is not for beginners or faint hearth-ed!!

Cherating - Morning was not as good as expected with smaller swell. However, the waves kicks in later afternoon with head height waves. But as usual when there is bigger swell in Cherating, you will experience their world class rip current as well. Hahahhahahaha, so this is the best time to practice your paddling!!!

Kuala Terengganu - Waves kick in as well.....most of the waves is working in Belakang Sekolah beach break. Waves only works early in the morning....as really strong wind kicks in later the day. No Surfing for the rest of the day

As we are getting bigger every year, this January we are expecting 100 competitors from the region, competing in 4 different categories for the total money prize of 8500 MYR, surfing goodies and cheerful applauding of the audience. Terengganu Go Surfing Day 2010 - Wrap Up

It was an awesome day at the beach with surfers, body-boarders and skim-boarders coming together to support the inaugural "Terengganu Go Surfing Day".

The aim of this event was to promote surfing and create awareness in the state of Kuala Terengganu. This 2 days exposure event covered basic surfing skills, safety and surfing etiquette targeted at the general public and children.

To participate in the event, all they had to do was show up, and sign up! All participants received free meals throughout the course of the event alongside goodies. Games were also held for the participants and spectators.

The first day was incredible, seeing surfers from all over the country as well as Singapore flooding onto Batu Buruk beach.

The number of participants was overwhelming with a total of 60 participants, more than double of the 30 we initially predicted. The workshop began by introducing the surf instructors, beach marshals, fire and rescue personnel to the 30 participants aged between 11 and 45 years old.

Through the course of the day, the participants learnt about the nature of the ocean, the rips and currents, reading waves, warming up and cooling down, basic surfing skills, equipment, etiquette on the ocean, water hazards and safety.

On it’s tremendous final day, with the low tide and the wind howling offshore. I remember one participant saying, "It’s such a waste that this is not a contest day, what awesome waves for a contest".

The level of surfing amazed the spectators as this was the first time seeing surfers throwing big sprays, tucking into barrels and landing aerials as demonstrated by the local talent such as the Malaysia Billabong Team Riders.

This was something new for the local spectators as usually, everyone stays away from the water during the monsoon season. Irrational beliefs about the ocean, thinking that its more dangerous.

Due to the overwhelming success of the workshop, we have been given the green light by the Tourism of Malaysia to hand in a proposal for the first surfing contest in Batu Buruk Beach scheduled for next year.

C-Bay Off East Coast-Pahang, Malaysia

9-10th December 2010- C-Bay Off East Coast, Pahang
It was a tremendous day wif solid 4 feet waves hitting our coast, 2 days of solid barrels and blessed with clean & glassy waves!!!! Fortunately Aril brought his camera and got us some nice pictures with some surfers ripping each and every waves that land on our coast. Thumbs up for Aril and Samad for the awesome pics. So if u guys are wondering, how good the waves can be? I would say this days is rated as 7 out of 10.

C-Bay is quoted one of the best spot in the East Coast of Malaysia. However, it is not in everyones favorite spot as there is no easy access to this spot. No Hotel, No Restaurant, No Toilet, No Cars, etc etc. All you need is 4X4 and a long rocky walk plus rock jump off to the point. Not for the fainthearted and narrow minded surfers!! heeheheeehehehehehehe

Refreshment-Surf Spot in Malaysia

This is a point break left-hander situated off Cherating. Some locals called it "Ombak Ratu"....

Nothing big nothing great but Good Fun. This spot can produce some nice left hander but cant hold really big waves. I would say only slight overhead....but you dont want to be too greedy to take long ride as you might end up smashing on the nice cliff right in-front!!! They produce some nice rip current as well towards the cliff...hehehehehe....have fun!

Cherating Occy Grom 2010 Results

Jay-R Esquivel from the Philippines Takes Out the Occy Grom Comp in Malaysia

(Sunday 10 January, 2010): 13 year-old Jay-R Esquivel from the Philippines won his first international grommet contest today at the Billabong Occy Grom Comp at Cherating Beach in Malaysia. Young Jay-R put on an amazing display of surfing during all three days of competition at the long, sandy-bottomed point break, getting cheers and wowing the crowd on the beach. The energetic grom showed off a well-rounded repertoire of maneuvers consistently impress the judges and rack up big points in virtually every heat.

And this talented youngster not only bested his fellow groms in the Occy Grom Comp, but he also took a second place in the Billabong Pro Am Men’s Open Division, receiving a wild card into the event to try his luck against the bigger boys. On the podium he was asked to say a few words to audience, so the shy little shredder bravely took the microphone and said, “Thanks Billabong and thanks to my sponsor” after accepting his trophy and prizes. Jay-R won this trip to Occy Grom Comp as a reward for his second place finish at the Billabong Grom Comp in the Philippines in December of 2009.

Winning the Men’s Open in the Billabong Pro Am was Hussain Areef from the Maldives. Areef was also a standout from his very first heat, showing off his impressive dexterity in every type wave that came his way. In the final he had to overcome the challenge of a super grom Jay-R Esquivel, Cherating grom Didaqt, and Satu Suku’s Tunku Khairil, but he was well up to the task and earned the top spot on the winners podium.

Just after paddling in from a quick expression session before the Men’s Open final, MC Tai Graham called Mark “Occy” Occhilupo up to the microphone to say a few words to the competitors and spectators on the beach. “I’m so stoked to be here in Malaysia,” Occy said. “Everybody makes you feel so welcome, you guys are such amazing hosts. And we scored some great waves over this weekend too. I never thought there would be waves this good here in Malaysia, it was unbelievable. It’s really been a great comp and a fun time, and I want to thank all the locals and the Billabong crew for making it such a big success. The groms here are absolutely ripping…to be out there in the water with them and to watch them going for it was the best thing ever,” he exclaimed.

Then Tai asked him when he would be back, to which Occy responded, “If that’s an invitation, and it sounded like it was, for sure I’m coming back!” which got a big round of cheers and claps from the crowd.

Over the three day competition held at the seaside town of Cherating on the east coast of Malaysia, 115 contestants from 11 countries gathered to compete for fun, prestige, prizes and goodies including surfboards, Billabong boardies, shirts and backpacks, Nixon watches, Von Zipper eyewear, Kustom footwear and more, in the Occy Grom Comp and the Billabong Pro Am that run from the 8th to the 10th of January, which included Men’s Open, Women’s, Masters, Grommet and Bodyboarding division.

Chendor Off Day

When it comes to Surfing Chendor, our expectation is always above the sky. Its been a full month we have solid waves and enjoying every moment of it. But today, the wind was blowing fully onshore and the waves was so choppy and messy!! What a dawn patrol day for us.......

Im suppose to bring Glenn (a surfer i met from this blog) to checkout our best spot in Malaysia. Unfortunately, it wasnt as good as it was. I guess Chendor is too camera shy.......we were fully equipped with camera and so on. So better luck next time for Glenn!!!!

either it is broken into 2, small ding or broken fin plugs...just head down
to Cherating and look for Mamat for repairs. He has 2 years hands on shaping
surfboards experience in Australia with Greg Webber so i believe his
ability to repair your surfboards is beyond expectation.

Unforgettable Kuala Terengganu

Who will ever know my surfing trip to Kuala Terengganu will end up in a 3 days 2 nites in Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, Batu Buruk. This is how the story started....

My journey to K.T started as early as 12am from KL....it was a rainy nite so our trip was rather slow and dull. Since there is only me & Joel this time travelling all the way up North to try out the Infamous Right Hander waves - Jetty Lama Merang!! The journey takes about 5 hours from KL.

Along our journey, i had stomachache so we had to stop few times for toilet sessions. Im just too lazy to describe to whole situation but upon reaching Batu Buruk, K.T. we stop at the beach for a nap. At about 7am, we woke up and the swell was rather small but the shape are really good. So Joel decided to go for a dip while i went back to Sleep!!!

At about 9am, i decided to head down to local clinic for my stomachache problem. My intention was to get medicine and move on to surf later on. ButTttt.....
When i got in the room, the doctor freak out when i told her i have stomachache. She insisted that i go to Government Hospital for treatment otherwise she will report POLICE?????
Stomachache is a CRIME??? Without realising, Kuala Terengganu actually have a COLERA OUTBREAK!! So any problem regarding stomach issue have to be admitted to Government Hospital.

So there i goes, i was forced to be admitted in the Government Hospital. According to the junior Doctor, i have to be admitted for 1 night to clarify that im "Negative" in Colera. For your information, Colera Outbreak only happen in Kuala Terengganu and the source is from water or food....but i havent even drink or eat anything from Kuala Terengganu!!!! So frustrated!!!
Level 8E was my ward and i was usher to my VIP bed with 58 other room mates. With both my hand on IV drips, i looks like im having a disease or something!!!
I was so sad that i have to stay here instead of surfing on the beach cos the hospital is only located in front of the Batu Buruk Beach. So eventually i can see the break from my ward!!! Hahahahahahahahahaha
So i gave Joel, JC and the rest of the Kuala Terengganu surfers know about my situation and apologise that i couldnt meet up with them. Anyway, it was a long long nite in the hospital. I was bored to death but lucky enough to have Ipod Touch from Joel so i can play some games.

Day 2- I was happy waiting for my results and callin up Joel regarding the swell. It is picking up and swell looks really nice. After waiting for few hours, the clock seems to move so slow...
At noon, i call up the nurse to check on my results. The answer is always " nanti saya check dgn doctor'. At about 3pm i asked again....,same answer again. Im getting frustrated again and try to ask again at about 6pm!!! I got the same answer!!! So i head up straight to the DOC....
HEY DOC, u guys promise 1 day results and thats why im here....otherwise i wont bother coming to the hospital. The best part, i didnt even go to toilet while im admitted!!! Most Positive Patient will go toilet 3-10 times a day and vomit too. I dont have any of the syndromes.
Then the Doc says' im so so sorry, there seems to be around 200 ppl admitted today so i guess we are slow on the results. Im sorry u have to stay another night!!!! I almost fainted!!! Another boring night in the hospital....

But this time, i move around and start to chat with other room mates. Since my ipod out of battery...so i start to find out about surfing in K.T. I ask most of the patient about where got possible surf break and met some new friends....
After dinner time, the security guard came in and Shouted "Ibrahim dari KL".."Ibrahim dari KL"
for at least 10 times moving around the ward..looking for Ibrahim!!! So some patient even help shouting and looking for "Ibrahim from KL". I was suprise as i thought im the only chinese and only guy from KL. After 2 minutes the security guard came in again, this time he shouted "BRYAN dari KL". Then everyone start laughing...Ibrahim atau Bryan??? Then the security start laughing so as the rest!!! It was actually for me!!! Joel, JC and the rest of the K.T surfing crews came to visit me....i was so happy to see the rest of the gang and chatted for a while. Im only allowed 10 minutes to chat wif them as im under quarantine and they are not allowed to see me.
I made my way through the guard. It was so sweet that the surfers came to visit...thank you guys!!

Day 3- My final day...i call up JC in the morning hoping that he can come pick me up as Joel already left to Chendor hoping for some better waves as K.T is full of rain and strong wind.
At 11 am, the nurse come to me and tell me im allowed to discharge cos im tested NEGATIVE!!!
YahOOooOooOo...finally my days in Hospital is over!!! Im so so happy!! At noon im already at the beach waiting to surf....

So for you guys who are travelling to East Coast, try to avoid Ice Cube, Keropok Lekor just for a short while. This is just a temporary outbreak........until then, dont want to hear any surfers got quarantine in Hospital for COLERA!! hahahaahh Peace.....

Never too young or too old to LEARN SURFING

This write-up is just a dedication for those people out there who like to find out more about surfing and also learning to surf in Malaysia. Before i even start writing more, i just want to remind you guys that surfing is the one of most wonderful thing that happen in my life.

Off course surfing is never easy to pick up as many beginner started surfing the wrong way. You need someone to actually guide you or even give you surfing lesson. I know this might cost you a bit but it is worth every penny and save up your learning period. Then people always think that you gotta be fit to be a surfer, you might be wrong. Let me explain this.....

I was so skeptical when i started picking up surfing many years back. I was 105 kgs and i was so broke during that time as im not from a rich family and im still studying. My first question was am i too fat to learn surfing and how much it cost to surf? Do i need to buy all the equipments, clothings and so on???
It doesnt matter what race you are, what size you are, what age you are, what gender you are, how much money you have, how good looking or ugly you are...
It is always possible if you have to passion for something.

1. Surfing Lesson- In Cherating, you probably pay around RM50-RM100 for surfing lesson per day (couple of hours), you need 2-5 days lesson split up into few weeks.

2. Surfboard- You DONT NEED to buy a board when you are learning surfing, just hire a surfboard in Cherating which cost you about RM50-RM100 a day. You only buy surfboard when you are more familiar with surfing. Dont waste your money, you might not even like surfing!!!! But i hope you like it...heheheheheeh
Never learn surfing on a shortboard, it will slow down your surfing process....take up surfing on a soft top surfboards or longboards.

3. Clothing- For Guys, you probably need a boardshort and rash guard (lycra t-shirt). But if you dont have, just get knee length light material pant and t-shirt is good enough. Never go topless on a soft top boards(surf school board) as it will give you rashes after surfing..cos your skin rubs on the rubber material during surfing on the salty water...
For Girls, you probably need a boardshort and rash guard as well. But if you dont have, just get knee length light material pant and t-shirt is good enough. Never wear a bikini top to surf when you are learning...your bikini will just slides off!! This is a reminder for the new surfer girls. Or even causes you rashed riding on the soft boards. Just wear what you can afford and have.......

4. Money- You dont need alot of money to learn surfing........the experience is priceless....

5. Transport- If you dont have car, just hitch a ride with some of the surfers from KL during the weekend to Cherating. You can split the cost of traveling. Or else, just get a bus ride to Cherating.

6. Hotel- There are many hotel & guesthouse in Cherating ranging from RM30 to RM500 per nite. All depending how much you can afford. Sharing a room on a guesthouse is the cheapest way there.

First Swell 28th Oct- 1st Nov 09'

Just started my first journey to the East Coast this monsoon season and here are the wonderfull 5 days journey begins...

Day 1- Surf Spot "Belakang Sekolah", Chendering, Kuala Terengganu

Secluded beach break behind a local school. Whole day with no wind, waist to chest height when set rolls in with only 5 surfers in the water. Easily 4 to 7 turns on each waves. Classic location that only surfable when small swell. A really good start for me for the first day....exhausted!!!

Day 2- Surf Spot "Batu Buruk" Kuala Terengganu

Its a beach break on a nice commercialized beach with many facilities and locals hanging out. Was lucky enough with glassy day again with bigger swell as Belakang Sekolah didnt work so this is my spot for the day.
Manage to meet up with some of the local K.Terengganu surfing crew. It was fun and they are really mellow and cool guys. We surf together and waves were so clean and glassy the whole day.
I would say i surf about 8 to 9 hours a day till im worn out!!!! Did a few sms back to KL to some of my surfers friends to come up to KT for the cool waves but mostly say No due to long distance travelling.
Except for Joel, Brenda and Alice who decided to come on Friday morning as this was the peak of the week.

Day 3- Surf Spot "Batu Buruk" Kuala Terengganu

Met up with our KL gang and head up straight to Batu Buruk and they were amazed by the waves. Although it was a rainy day but the waves was simple Beautiful!!!!!! Another glassy day at K.T and it was a weekend holiday in K.T on Friday. So here we are, a small gathering with the whole surfing crews from Kuala Terengganu!!! We were very very honored to met up with them. Not to mentioned our 1st surfer from K.T and the legend who brought surfing to K.T (the brothers) J.C and J.D. Respect to the brothers who willing to teach and bring up surfing in Kuala Terengganu.
Everyone was stoked on the waves and we just surf and surf the whole day. At sets, we get overhead waves rolling in.....simple too sweet.
I stay out whole day....soaked wet till i reach the hotel in the nite. Awesome day......

Day 4- Surf Spot "Batu Buruk" Kuala Terengganu

Another rainy day and we were expecting another glassy day with bigger waves today. Unfortunately the waves was smaller (about shoulder height) with slight wind. Joel & Brenda decided to surf as the shape of the waves is still good. I didnt go in cos i was on a slight fever due to yesterday all day out in the water. At about 10:30am, storm hits right in and waves was rather messy but surfable and we decided to take a break.
A call back to Raymond to check on how the swell is doing in Kijal but no one picks up the phone. So we thought that Kijal might be glassier with small waves. Then we decided to head to Cherating hoping for a
cleaner waves....and due to my fever as well. So we say Goodbye with the whole K.T surfing crews and somehow they were kinda sad that we are leaving since we bond so well from the beginning. But everyone knows that we will be back again.....I would like to say Thank You guys for such a wonderfull week in K.T. Especially J.C who brought me everywhere to surf and absence for a day work so we can surf together and Faizal for a ride to K.T.
We reach Kijal at about 2pm ( 2 hours from K.T)
and we were so dissapointed as the swell was really small and the waves were so so choppy. We guess we made the wrong choice leaving K.T......none of us went out to surf, just hang out and sleep on a hammock in Kijal.

Day 5- Surf Spot, Kijal, Terengganu

Reach Kijal from Cherating at about 8am and wind was pretty soft but swell was rather small with full tide...so more of a soft and fat waves for the morning. Decided to go in to try out....
didnt work out so i changed to a fun board, just cruising with it......At about lunch, i decided to have a break just watching the rest surfing. You wouldnt believe how many surfers actually starting to surf and
seeing so many new surfers really stoked me out. I guess its our different culture here, the more surfers here the more merrier it is. Unlike many other place, surfers prefer lesser crowds. For me, its more about having
fun and enjoying the waves.......
After lunch we decided to head home and come back again when the next swell hits......here i am, writing this blog on a early Monday morning...in the city with no waves, praying for the next swell.

Surfing Chendor

Chendor was the most talked about during the last surfing season as it produces the most consistent waves during the whole season. I was there last Christmas and i was so stoked that on that day the waves was pealing from dust till dawn. Let alone only 5 of us in the water enjoying the waves all by ourself!!!

In my blog itself, many has warn the new surfers on the danger of surfing in Chendor beach. It is not as bad as described but for newbies, surfing on the lower beach break is the best deal. Never try to paddle to the main point and surf with the more experience surfers. Your inexperience surfing skill will not only danger yourself but to other surfers as well....especially if u r waiting for waves down the lines. Often the more experience surfers will take off right in front of the rocks thus your chances of getting waves is almost impossible. So just chill out and learn on the lower beach break and watch how this more experience surfers surf....

It is not easy to access to Chendor beach break. It is located 10 minutes drive away from Cherating. The main break is almost 20 minutes walk from the secluded beach parking area. Car break-in are common here....park at own risk.
If u opt. to drive your car all the way to the break, you can do so by driving a 4X4 all the way in through the sandy beach. But remember to drive out once the tides comes in or else get ready to swipe away by the waves!!!!
There is another alternate route driving through the jungle with your normal car but car break-in is often in the jungle too....Sounds like alot of hassle rite? Hitch a ride with some of the locals sounds more interesting!!!
Or just settle and surf in Cherating is the best deal...

This is just abit of advice from a inexperience surfers like me. If u never been to any new spots, just sit by the beach and watch how is the beach situation and ask the locals before heading into the waves.

A Malaysian Surfer Gurl stories...Part 2

My days in Solscape, Raglan is getting better each day other with good people around. Too many parties, poker night, movie night.. etc.. Time flies when you're having a good time ay, it has almost come to my second month in Raglan. Im still having fun... more fun each time actually.. My routine in Raglan is get up at 6am everyday without failed cause early bird get the worms,surf for 3 hours then work at Sol for 1.5 hours to pay off my rent, lunch then surf again, dinner, movie/poker night...

Gosh !!!! i miss those time very much.. i remember pretty well that when i first paddled out to the line up at Manu bay, i was impressed by the local groms and girl surfing. HOLY shit !! they farking rips... its a whole different level of surfing here. surfing standard here is so high.. I don't think the rest of the world realise what they have in New Zealand.

However the thought of somewhere completely different, like New Zealand, is a destination on the mind of everyone. Once they get here they will be blown away.Winter has arrived, everyone in solscape started leaving the ugly weather ahead. i was pretty excited about spending my first winter in my life abroad though. weather is getting real cold in Raglan each day especially for me coming from a tropical country.
i saw hail first time in my life on the 24th june. it was pretty cool to see.. i was jumping with joy in the station house when i saw the deck filled with white pieces of ice.. people around me think i was crazy cause it was 1 degree celcius and everyone is freezing their butt off and stay as close as possible to the fire place.. it was a radical experience for sure.

Something interesting and exciting just about to happen. it falls on the 5th July 2008, Frenchie Steven and I drove to Piha from Raglan on a sunny winter day. Steven has ordered a custom board from Brad and we are gonna watch him shaping it. how often do you get the opportunity to do this ay? We are just bunch of lucky bastard and bitches to have him as a friend.
i was pretty excited to see the process of how a board been made closely too. We were given mask to cover our noses from the foam. Frenchie was sitting there quietly with anticipation of his new born lethal weapon!

there's up and down in my journey in new zealand, people in and out my life.. this is first time in my life, by myself in a new country, new place, new friends.. new friends became close friend and we treat each other like a big family... i was taking over housesitting for the dutchies for 3 weeks, i never liked cat in my life before i left home, but i found my new best friend - King Tubby, he's a fat as cat that live in the house. the first couple of days, i couldnt sleep cause of him making noises due to he isn't used to me.. but after we became good mates. he sleeps with me too.King Tubby changed me...

Well, brief story about my aussie trip.. i was staying with my friend in Maroubra Beach for 2 weeks . had a couple days of ok surf..then head up to Byron Bay to hunt for waves but i had no luck.. it's flat!!! neither Coolangatta was working well.. 2ft hauling onshore.. it's pretty deceptive. I was basically gave up surfing on the east coast of OZ.. instead of surfing.. went up party with some mates in "surfers paradise" then head to Fraser Island for few days.

we were on self drive adventure safari.. it's pretty fun trip though. then i continue my journey down south to Victoria.. spent a night in Melbourne city then head straight to the coast.. world famous bell beach in Torquay.. i love Torquay the most out of so many places i've been in aussie.. surf was pretty fun and good.. had a ball in torquay..then rented a car drive myself through the Great Ocean Road.. went to check out the 12 apostles and lord arc gorge.. pretty stunning view and amazing how mother nature created such a artistic picture on the coast.. Torquay just reminded me so much about Raglan.. Surfing town packed with good people and nice coast to stay in. but Oz can never live up like Nz to be honest. =p Victoria basically was my last stop.. flew back to NZ on the 2nd Oct 08.. when nearer to event, i was pretty excited to go back to nz .. i was really looking forward to that..

Traveling is always my passion since young.. im an adventurous dork and a sucker for extreme sport ..i started my travel 6 years ago and the travel bugs just never stopped biting me since then... i picked up surfing end of 2005, started mugging around with the giant soft top board in sunway lagoon for my first time in "surfing" but didnt managed to stand up til i got into Bali. Bryan was the one who introduced me to surfing. Thanks dude.. No regrets... haha.. the memory of my first stand up wave is still pretty fresh in my head eventhough its few years ago.. i remember pretty well it was a hot sunny day at Kuta beach. For sure, i didnt managed to stand up on my first, second or third attempt.. wipe out, got hit by the board, u named it...almost got me gave up trying to surf. But once i got my first ever wave, i was stoked as and screamed to the world that finally i DID it after all the hard work!! it paid off!!Surfing needs heaps of patience and determination for sure..

since then, im hooked. i started my first monsoon in Cherating by renting boards from Mimi's back in 2005 then finally i bought my first board end of 2006 from Bali. Got a 6'5, 20 and 2 1/2 stick to start with. it's perfect for beginner like me then i spent a month up in Cherating during 2006 monsoon to work on my surfing then had a surf trip with Bryan, Joel and Leo to the Philippines. We didn't get much surf over there due to the wrong season and also i just started surfing but the roadtrip was memorable. Im sure you guys(Bryan, Joel and Leo) know what i mean.. haha..My job as a freelancer allows me to travel anytime to surf but i didnt take surfing too seriously back then cause we live in the no waves land.. So I picked up bowl skating with Fellas Bryan, Joel and Leh.. All of us will go skate together on Friday night or whenever we're free.. Skating in the bowl = surfing on concrete.. it's tough.. i got injured most of the time when i just started.. but its fun after all. just imagining yourself riding a static waves.. how cool is that ay? since then, i travel everywhere with my surfboard along with my skate board.

one day in 2007, i decided to take a year break from work and home... i have chose New Zealand cause there's a tie with our government on Working Holiday Visa. I applied it and got the visa within 48 hours. Easy as.. it was a tough decision to leave everything behind but I was ecstatic and look forward to start a new life in a new place.. finally i make my way out of my comfort zone on the 28th Feb 2008. i was pretty nervous of course to start a new life in a new place and meeting people from around the world.. but i was ready to embark and embrace a new life..

On the 29th feb 08, my plane has finally arrived in the land of the long white clouds after a long haul flight from Bangkok..As the plane starts its descend downwards I know I will be looking out the window to a place I will be calling home for the year ahead of me. The smile on my face would be bright enough to light any dark corners of any room. That same adrenalin rushing through my body with excitement will start as my heart beats faster with every moment that passes. its a sunny end of summer day, prob 25 degree. came with a backpack on my back .after cleared from custom, i push my trolley around the airport to find the best way to get into the city as my journey in Aotearoa about to begin... hopped into the airbus, everything i hear and see are so new to me..it's hell of a different country that i used to... people are so friendly and the surrounding are breathtaking.

I didnt bring my board to New Zealand cause i know i could get a board at cheaper price here. I got a custom board made from a shaper i know before i left so its ready for me when i arrived. went to pick up my board from the surf shop and got my necessity for surfing .. first of all, i need to get a wetsuit eventhough its summer but the water temperature isnt as warm as the one i used to.. got myself a Rip Curl 3/2 steamer to start with.. feeling of surfing with wetsuit was the weirdest feeling ever.. i felt restrained on my move.. but i got used to it after couple of days.. i started with couchsurfing for my first 2 weeks in New Zealand.. i was surprised how warmth people are in NZ.. and couchsurfing is defo highly recommended for travelers to know the local and custom etc.. spent couple of nights in Auckland suburb North Shore then headed up to Ahipara.. the beginning of 90 miles beach.. its a beautiful place.. there have one of the best left hander too in NZ called shipwrecks bay but need a fairly big swell to wrap around. when the west coast is too big to surf then this place would work.. i was in Ahipara for 10 days, no surf til my last evening there. managed to catch couple of rides there. surfing in cold water with wetsuits defo is harder than you thought. it takes heaps out of ya..

my host brought me onto a yacht race on the east coast called Opua, i was damn lucky to stay a night in the yacht and cruised the famous attraction called Bay of islands for FREE where people pay hundreds.. that was my first time had the freshest mussels in my life too.. spent total of 2 weeks up in northland.. few days in keri - keri before i start my roadtrip with a canadian mate down the west coast to catch Jack Johnson concert..

we rented a camper van from Wicked campers and begin our surf roadtrip...first destination was at Piha then Raglan... Piha is a rugged black sand beach with gnarly waves, its the nearest beach to Auckland. it has its good fun days too.. next is Raglan, everyone i know in NZ told me good things about Raglan. i was really anxious to check out this place myself.. i had this strong feeling that Raglan is gonna be my home for the rest of my trip when i first arrived there.

Raglan is best known for its surf. Eight kilometres from the Raglan township is a series of surf breaks including Indicators, Whale Bay, and Manu Bay. Manu Bay was featured in the 1966 movie The Endless Summer . i only spent couple of days there this trip cause was racing against time to catch Jack Johnson concert down south in New plymouth.. After the concert, we headed east and passed Taupo.. Lake Taupo is the largest lake by surface area in New Zealand, and the largest freshwater lake by surface area in Oceanie.Taupo is best known for its skydiving activity too. i did a 15,000 ft with 1 min freefall... i never felt so free in my life.. its defo one of the craziest
thing i ever done in my life..

with the no waves search on the east coast, we headed back to west coast for the last few days of our roadtrip and camped out at Muriwai Beach and Maori Bay.

After we split, i bought myself a campervan named MAXINE. i fell in love at the first sight when i saw her at the backpackers car market. i was in bundle of joy while driving down south on SH1. arrived safely in Raglan with Maxine but surf was flat. I was doing couchsurfing for the first couple of days then i found this place called Solscape which filled with amazing people with great energy. they do take up WOOFERS so i signed up to be one. i was pretty anxious of what kind of job they gonna put me in since i have no experience cleaning or anything. so my first day of work is cleaning. met German -Mijram and English-Jennifer in Overlander and started to make beds, cleaning toilet, sweep and mopping floors. it was pretty strange at first but i enjoyed doing it after cuz i never had to do it back home. it's good to have humble experience after all. Being a WOOFERs taught me one thing which is i get to put myself in other people shoes that do cleaning routine for living. On the same day, i was invited to join a birthday BBQ party by this Dutch couple. Remco and Sanne, we became real good friends.

At the same time, i met other nice people too. Josh and Tom. We all got along real well since our eyes met. After spending a week in Raglan with beautiful people, good surf and nice township, i started to love this place. On the other hand, I found out there's a skatepark in town too and it turned out to be the best bowl i've skated so far in NZ. So when there's no surf, you'll find me skating in the bowl...

Skurfing Da River

This is the beautiful River of Cherating........when the waves is flat everywhere, this is the place we hangout!! Normally Tourist will come here and do their river boat trip on nature and wildlife, canoeing, fishing, monkey feeding, etc. But all we do our skurfing here!!!! It is similar to wake boarding but we carve our surfboards on that little small waves created from the boat. It is alot of fun....all we need is 50 bucks of petrol, boat, rope and a surfboard!!! I

Tidal Bore Surfing

Have any of you heard of Tidal Bore Surfing? I once think about trying it in
Sarawak but decided that i stick to beach surfing instead of river surfing...
Here, I just give you a short brief on what is Tidal Bore..

Tidal Bore Phenomenon

Tidal bore is a solitary wave formed when a rising tidal front tries to enter a shallow and narrowing river with high tidal range from abroad estuary. In the process, the tidal front is retarded by the river flow and the bed friction start to build up. When it reaches the critical point, it breaks and moves forward upstream as a rushing wave called tidal bore. As it travels upstream, it will decrease in height and velocity and eventually dies out due to energy dissipation.In Malaysia, tidal bore phenomenon can only be seen at Batang Lupar, Batang Sadong, Batang Samarahan and Batang Saribas in the state of Sarawak.

Sri Aman is situated about 194 kilometres by road from Kuching City. The unique phenomenon of tidal bore occurrs in Batang Lupar. Batang Lupar flows from the Klinkang Range to South China Sea with river length of 275 kilometres. Geographicaly, Batang Lupar has a big opening at the rivermouth and becomes narrow when it reaches upstream. It is believed that tidal bore starts at Pulau Seduku located about 44.6 kilometres from river mouth and 34.5 kilometres from Sri Aman town. Tidal bore or locally known as benak occurs everyday with different wave lengths and heights. However, during spring tide, normally on the third and eighteen day of the Chinese Lunar Calendar, tidal bores with high magnitude can be observed clearly.

Besides the danger of the waves, the best part about this river is the residence beneath it.
It is a legendary spot for the Malaysia most famous crocrodile "Bujang Senang".

Bujang Senang’ or ‘Happy Bachelor’ was the name for a huge crocodile that grew to 19 feet and 4 inches. The crocodile is notorious as a man-eating ‘monster’. It had a well-formed and worn canines on its huge jaw. ‘Bujang Senang’ was well known back in 1993, when it went on its killing rampage around the Sri Aman area. The Batang Lupar River, which flows through Sri Aman, still conjures up fearsome images, as it was home to this legendary killer. It was struck down by a shotgun shell in Sg. Pelaban in Lingga Batang Lupar at Sri Aman.

best surf on high season (May to Sept) but u can always surf somewhere on the east coast if u r there the low season Oct-Apr......remember high season can be overcrowded!!!good luck...

Flight
always opt. for Airasia if u are looking for the cheapest flight (USD50-150). Airasia charges RM40 for surfboards (15kg) one way. However, your check-in luggage (15kg) is separated from the surfboard weight. But if u looking for a better flight, checkout MAS or Qatar Airways.....

Arrival
Just get a local cab from the airport. It is quite safe to get from the airport as if u take taxi from outside, they will rip you off. Normally taxi from airport to Kuta area is around Rp. 70,000 to Rp. 100,000.

Accomodation
If budget is your type of thing...always look for place in Kuta area.
Best opt. is always around Poppies 1 or Poppies 2 area...it is smack right in the middle of everything for surfing, parties, shopping and so on..........
Normally it will cost around Rp. 70,000 - Rp. 200,000 for both fan & a/c room.

TRANSPORT
Taxi - always lookout for Blue Bird taxi Only...this is the most reliable taxi in
Indonesia. It is a metered taxi so dont have to worry!

Bike - motorbike rental, is around Rp. 30,000-Rp. 45,000 depending on your
negotiation skills. You might need a international license but i always show
police (polisi) my m'sian license and it works!!! just photocopy your passport
and keep it on your bike plus some small change, just in case.

Car - It is hard to drive along the small lanes in Kuta area. So i suggest you get a
bike or else get a car with driver. I have a good car rental with reliable driver.
8 seater 4 WD very clean with a/c.......budget is suited on each individual. Ask
me if u r interested...i can recommend you.

There is shopping through out Jl. Legian, Jl. Pantai Kuta, Jl. Poppies 1,
Jl. Poppies 2, Seminyak, Baypass Highway...u will see Factory Outlet
and also Billabong Factory Outlet for the best bargain. If u r looking for
cheap local stuff, go for Sukawati market instead of tourist Ubud market.

DVD
U can get cheap copy dvd for Rp.100,000 for 14 pcs. (approx. RM35) almost
whole of Kuta area....remember to test all your dvd. Some is empty dvds,
some is not working.....dont be shy to test out all your dvds.

For beginners, i would recommend only in Kuta beach. Other place not recommended. As any intermediate surfer who like to try out reef for first time, can tryout Balangan or Kuta Reef when waves is about 2-4ft.
I have friends who lost their board in Reef....so use thicker leash/new...dont save money! Or u lost your board!!!

When leaving Bali....u have to pay Rp. 150,000 for airport tax and again
Rp. 115,000 for your surfboard with Airasia. Good luck and have fun in Bali

REMEMBER: Show respect to surfers in Bali n u will gain your respect back.

SURFING PAGUDPUD, PHILLIPINES

I know everyone must be wondering how is the surf scene in Philippines. I was surprise to see the crowds and surf scene there. The waves hit the coast through out the year from Southern to the Northern coast of Philippines. I was lucky enough to do a short trip there with couple of my mates from KL and a surf buddy from Manila. We travel from Manila to La Union right up to the northern part of Pagudpud. The make the trip sweeter, i was driving left hand drive all the way through the journey. Get honk most of the time on the wrong lane!!! 'MENTAWAI 2009' SURF TRIP

'MENTAWAI 2009' with Billabong Team Malaysia & Cali Crews

Late May/Early June 2009,

13 surfers were on their way one of the World’s most famous surf destinations, the Mentawais. Most of the crew travelled half way across the world to surf perfect waves in the warm crystal clear waters of the Indonesian chain of islands.

The swell forecast showed some waves but nothing major the day we arrived. I personally was glad of that as I haven’t surfed since the monsoon in January. Start small first and moving up to bigger waves seemed to be a good deal.

We got off our 10 hour Ambu-Ambu ferry ride at the break of dawn to get onto our small boats which were to be our transportation for the next 1 week. No time was wasted, we chucked our stuff into a small house cum shop and got ready for the first surf session. Destination, Scarecrows.

The day ended really early. By 9.30 p.m the entire team was already sleeping, knocked out by the first day of surf and a good 24 hour travelling and transit time.

Day 2

Unlike surfing in Bali, we didn’t have to wake up before sunrise to catch the surf. Sun rise in the Mentawai Islands is around 6.30 a.m local time but we usually got up at around 7.30 to have breakfast, head back for a quick poo and head onto our boats.

As some of the crew were natural footers, including me, we wanted to surf some right handers. We got on the boat with our lunch packed, headed on a 1 hour boat ride to play grounds on the next island. Play grounds had some right handers which included Bankvaults, Pit Stops, Nipussi and 4 Bobs.

After the hour long ride, we stopped by at the famous spot Bankvaults. It was firing on Malaysian standards. There were a few guys out and looked kinda sketchy with the head plus high waves shifting and breaking on different sections of the reef.

We opted to surf somewhere easier with less crowds/no people. Beng Bengs was our next stop. There, long walls of water passed and broke over a pretty shallow reef. It was undoubtly on of the best waves most of us have surfed. Long over head waves, easy and very smackable for some of the boys. With Khairil getting some Layback Snaps and Mamat some aerial. It was the perfect opportunity for Mark Dimo, our trip photog to snap photos which turned out awesome.

After about two hours surf, we had a generous serving of the typical fried noodles and rice and some fruit for lunch. We scouted around for another spot to surf. This time, we got off at Nipussi to surf a right hander. Although sizeable, the surf at Nipussi on that day wasn’t good. Fellow pilot and friend Tien said he’s surfed it way better before and had a blast then

After a few waves and wipeouts we decided to head back to Tuapejat for a session at Icelands. There, only 4 surfers paddled out (Khairil, Morgan, Luiz and Tien) to catch (or attempt to catch a few waves). We saw a few bombs drop in with one kiwi dude wiping out on a pretty massive set. Luiz snapped his one and only board that evening. I took some photos as the surf was too big for me. At the end of the session, I remember Tien saying after Icelands, “I don’t know why I went out there” especially after a two surf sessions at Beng Beng’s and Nipussi.

Icelands is quite a messed up spot cause of the freak sets that roll in without warning and you’d have absolutely no chance of escaping when it does come in. In other words, get ready to eat it.
