Surfer Girls Pua and Salini Take On Cimaja Point in West Java

26 June 2012, Kuta-Bali: Surfer Girls Pua Johnson and Salini Rengganis just returned to Bali from a trip to Cimaja Point in West Java, where they got a chance to surf and attend the Quiksilver Open West Java surfing competition that took place from June 14-17.

It was Pua’s first contest ever outside of Bali, so she was really excited about it.  She traveled to Cimaja with her father Richard, leaving on an early morning flight from Bali to Jakarta, and because she had never been to Cimaja before, didn’t know that the beach wasn’t close to Jakarta.  “I was so sleepy when we left Bali, but when we got to Jakarta I was so psyched…all I wanted to do was surf,” she said.  “But then I found out we had to drive in a car for about 5 hours!  I did fall back asleep in the car, but as soon as we got to the hotel I couldn’t wait to go surfing.  There weren’t many people in the water and they let me catch some waves, so it was really fun.“

The next morning she and her dad went down to the beach to prepare for her heat and she started wondering where Salini was.  Turns out Salini was stuck in traffic on the drive from Jakarta, so Pua went out and surfed her heat under Richards watchful eye and coaching.  “I was super hyped to be at the contest, and when my heat came I was a little nervous. I could have done better,” she said.  “I almost made it through my heat against Michaela and Iis, but I let it slip away.  Next time I’ll try and train harder, and hopefully do better.”

It was Salini’s second trip to Cimaja, and she was happy just to be there at the event with Pua and the other girls, even though she missed her heat.  “I had been at a photo shoot for a film festival for three days in Bandung, and we finished at 4 am in the morning.  So we left at 5 am and got stuck in traffic,” she explained.  “But I’m glad I finally got there and could hang out and surf with the other girls in the afternoon.”

The next day she got to go to another nearby surf spot and do some free surfing with Annissa from Thailand, Gamala Hanafiah from Jakarta and some others, while Gamala’s husband Andryz took photos of them from the water.

Nadia Bintoro, Head of Marketing Communication at Surfer Girl commented: “It’s unfortunate that Salini wasn’t able to make it to her heat, but Pua did quite well competing outside Bali for the first time. We are very proud of the girls and believe it would make valuable knowledge for the next competitions”

“My trip to Cimaja was so much fun,” said Salini.  “Thanks Surfer Girl! Now I’m looking forward to my next trip to Scar Reef in Sumbawa!”

Good luck Salini!

O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge to Kick Off on June 28 in West Sumbawa, Indonesia

26 June 2012, Kuta-Bali:  The O’Neill and Coca-Cola ISC crews have been busy preparing for the start of the inaugural O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge, which will take place during the three day period from June 28 to July 1st in West Sumbawa, Indonesia

The six star Coca-Cola ISC sanctioned professional surfing competition will be drawing Indonesia’s top ranked surfers to compete in the beautiful and unspoiled West Sumbawa area, with a total prize purse of Rp 60 million rupiah up for grabs in the Men’s Open, Women’s and Master’s Divisions, along with valuable Coca-Cola ISC Championship points.

The swell forecast is looking perfect for the event, with a building swell that should peak on Saturday afternoon for a great finish at Scar Reef.  The backup location of YoYo’s is being prepared for the early rounds and early mornings of the competition, as it is one of the most reliable and consistent surf breaks in the area, perfect for the morning sessions while Scar Reef typically gives up her best in the afternoons.

It promises to be another epic event on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour with the nations best pro surfers battling it out over the razor sharp and aptly named Scar Reef, taking off deep and pulling in with the hope of nabbing the biggest and longest barrels….and coming home with the traditional Scar Reef trophy sword held high!

Previous Scar Reef winners Rahtu Suargita and Raditya Rondi will be there, along with this years number one ranked Lee Wilson and number two ranked Mustofa Jeksen, as well as Garut Widiarta, Dede Suryana, Pepen Hendrik and Mega Semadhi to name but a few.

About O’Neill
O'Neill, the original California surf, snow and lifestyle brand, was founded in 1952 when a young man named Jack O'Neill took his unstoppable passion for surfing and used it to beat Mother Nature at her own game. Pioneering the world's first neoprene surf wetsuit, Jack had successfully found a way to extend his surf sessions in the bone-chilling breaks of Northern California. He opened up the garage doors to his first surf shop soon after.
While many things have changed since those humble beginnings, Jack's initial vision of producing functional and innovative board riding products continues to lie at the core of everything the company does. O'Neill's set of core values - innovation in style and technology - has seen the brand devote itself wholeheartedly to the evolution of action sports. From the first neoprene surf wetsuit and board leash, to the world's first stitchless board shorts and range of groundbreaking wearable electronics, O'Neill's spirit of innovation will always drive the company forwards.
Today, O'Neill can be found the world over. In touch with its rich heritage and the universal appeal of board riding culture, O'Neill will always be committed to growing its reputation as one of the world's leading youth lifestyle brands based on a unique half-century of history as the First Name in the Water.

Lee Wilson Takes Quiksilver Open West Java 2012 Win

17 June 2012, Cimaja-West Java: Lee Wilson put on an impressive display of competitive surfing in the 25 minute finale of the Quiksilver Open West Java at Cimaja Beach today to win the Men’s Open Division final over fellow Bali surfer Mustofa Jeksen.  Wilson took to the air and used his full repertoire of progressive surfing maneuvers to score first a 9.5 (out of a possible 10 points) and then follow it up with a 7.5 to leave Jeksen needing a combination of waves to gain the lead.  When the horn blew the end of the final, Wilson's combined score was 17 points to Jeksen's 10.2. Wilson was last year’s Quiksilver Best West Java event winner as well, which now makes him a two-time champ at Cimaja.
From the podium at the beach during the trophy presentation, Wilson first thanked the locals for sharing their beach and the organizing crew in Cimaja, saying “I love coming here to Cimaja, thanks so much to everybody that made it possible.”  Then he added, “and a special thanks to my daughter Ava, who is my inspiration.”

According to Wilson’s father Robert, Lee has been coming to Cimaja regularly since January of 1985, when he was still in his mother’s stomach!  Lee was born in Jakarta in October of 1985, his father from Australia and his mother from Indonesia.

Wilson was last year’s Quiksilver Best West Java winner and also the winner of the most recent Coca-Cola ISC surf competition held just two weeks ago in the Mentawai Islands of Sumatra. He was in top form during the entire event, consistently posting big scores and defeating the best of the best surfers in his chase for the top spot on the podium, including bringing down local Cimaja powerhouse Dede Suryana earlier today in Quarterfinal 1, then veteran and 2004 ISC champion Pepen Hendrik in Semifinal 1 before meeting goofyfooter Mustofa Jeksen in the final.

“I couldn’t hardly sleep last night,” said Wilson after being asked about his matchup with Suryana earlier in the morning, “as I kept thinking about Dede and how strong he was surfing.  I didn’t know how I was going to get past him, I really didn’t, because the way he was surfing yesterday was the best I’ve ever seen him surf.  In our heat this morning it seemed like he was going to win it until I got that barrel and scored 9 points, and then I was so lucky no more good waves came in. ”

Suryana was understandably disappointed at not being in the final and winning the event in front of his hometown friends and family, but was introspective in his response saying, “I think I was a bit too relaxed out there actually, as I had looked at the swell report last night it showed that the swell was building today.  I was confident that there would be more and bigger set waves, so I chose to be patient, which ended up working against me.  But that’s competition, it’s like that sometimes and we can’t control the waves, so it’s ok. There is always the next comp so we can try again!”

Mustofa Jeksen was also very positive after his second place finish, saying “Sure I would have liked to win, but going backside at Cimaja limits my variety of maneuvers and Lee was surfing so good, doing things like getting two airs on one wave, so it was really difficult.  But I’m happy about second place, as I have already won the first event of the year and now got a second, so I’m in a good position going into the next event, which is the lefthander of Scar Reef in West Sumbawa.”  With his runner up finish today, Jeksen is now number 2 in the Coca-Cola ISC tour 2012 rankings.

Wilson now sits in the number one spot in the Coca-Cola ISC Tour Open Division rankings with two contest wins already this year.  He has also won two Coca-Cola ISC championships, the first in 2007 and the second in 2009, and looks to be well on his way to a third one in 2012.

In the Longboard Division final it was another repeat win for Java’s Arip “Mencos” Hidayat, whose mastery of the longboard is almost legendary.  He quickly combo’d the rest of the field by racking up high scores of 9.25 and 8.75, with the Philippines Luke Landrigan giving chase but settling for second spot.  Arip is also the reigning 2011 Coca-Cola ISC Longboard Champion.

The Philippines can be very proud of the performance put up by Nilbie Blancada in the Women’s Division, which had a truly international final with women from Indonesia, Taiwan, and Australia in addition to the Philippines.  Nilbe, who hails from Siargao Island and calls the world famous wave of Cloud Nine her home break, charged the Cimaja waves, big or small, without a hint of hesitation, clearly dominating each heat and the final.  “I’m so happy to win, and happy to be here in Indonesia to surf.  It’s the first time I’ve been out of the Philippines so it’s a little different for me, but it’s nice to be here and meet new people, and surf Indonesia waves,” she said.

The Masters Division was once again taken out by Sujari, the older brother of Dede Suryana, so he now has two Quiksilver Open trophies on his shelf.  Ketut Juliarta of Bali gave him a good chase, eventually losing out by only half a point, but Sujari’s local knowledge and years of surfing Cimaja Point gave him near perfect wave selection and allowed him a variety of maneuvers with which to impress the judges.
The Quiksilver Open West Java was blessed with near perfect weather and surfing conditions during the four days of competition, with 3-4 foot waves consistently rolling in and making for an easy job for Contest Director Tipi Jabrik, who is also Quiksilver Indonesia’s Sports Marketing Manager and the Coca-Cola ISC’s President.

“We love coming to Cimaja,” said Jabrik, “as its such a consistent and contestable wave for all surfing divisions.  Plus it’s a beautiful place, the beach is easily accessible, and the people are so helpful, making it really easy to come here. The West Java government has been very supportive as well Pak Dadang as the local organizer, and through our Coca-Cola ISC Keepin’ It Green program that is supported by Quiksilver, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, the ROLE Foundation and GUS, we can keep this place looking better and better each year.”

As part of the Coca-Cola ISC Keepin’ It Green program aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the tour wherever it goes, there have been daily beach cleanups involving the local school children than have been very well received, and after the beachside awards presentation on Sunday afternoon the Quiksilver and Coca-Cola Amatil crew along with Curtis Lowe from the ROLE Foundation planted some trees near the beach to help lessen the environment impact in the future.  “We’re so delighted to see that the kids are so happy and into picking up the trash and keeping their beach clean,” said Curtis.  “They really seem to be getting it, and we’re looking forward to seeing even more progress next year.  Leaving this beach cleaner than we found it, and planting some trees that will help clean the air and preserve the soil here is the least we can do, both for the locals and for the overall environment. And a special thanks to Tisah, who is here at the beach everyday without fail picking up trash.  She more than deserves the Keepin’ It Green Award!”

Cimaja Delivers Non-Stop Action for Day One of the Quiksilver Open West Java

14 June 2012, Cimaja-West Java
:  Cimaja Beach delivered non-stop action in the form of perfectly pumping 3-4 foot waves, with the lucky competitors tearing into them with gusto to start off the Quiksilver Open West Java 2012 today.

Competitors from the Women’s, Longboard, and Open Division all saw action today at the scenic cobblestone point break of Cimaja on the West Coast of the island of Java, with the 15 women from countries including Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, the USA, and Indonesia taking to the water at 8 am to start things off.

The undisputed favorite in the Women’s Division was Nilbie Blancada from the Philippines.  Nilbie hails from Siargao Island and her home break is the world class wave of Cloud 9, and her experience showed as she impressed the judges and the crowd who clapped and cheered as she proceeded to aggressively attack the Cimaja waves and post the Women’s Division highest single wave score of an 8.0 (out of a possible 10) in her semifinal heat, and also the highest combined heat score of 14.75 out of 20.

This was her first time surfing at Cimaja, and her first trip to Indonesia for that matter, so she was delighted to have made into the final, which will be held on Sunday.  “It was a little bit hard because I didn’t know what to expect with this wave, but I just tried to surf as good as I could,” explained Nilbie.  “The wave were a little bit tricky, you have to learn how to surf it, and I’m happy I did ok today,” she added.

Last year’s event winner Indonesian Iis Trisnawati put together an impressive backside attack to clearly signal her intention to once again hoist the winners check and trophy come Sunday, scoring the second highest single wave score of 7.0 out of 10.

The finalist that will battle it out on Sunday are a great international mix, with Iis Trisnawati from Indonesia, Nilbie Blancada from the Philippines, Jessie Hong from Taiwan, and Australian expat Aysia Doig from Bali.

In Longboard action today, last year’s event winner and 2011 Coca-Cola ISC Longboard Division champion Arif “Mencos” Hidayat put on a stellar performance for the fans on the beach, wowing and the judges with a 9.20 point wave that included a switchfoot Hang 5 to Hang 10, a switchfoot drop knee cutback, and a 360 spinner.

The Philippines Luke Landrigan also earned his place in the finals with consistent and critical traditional longboarding combined with progressive maneuvers, thus setting up the final four that includes Landrigan, Hidayat (Java), Gilang (Java) and Teiki Balian (France).

With the Women’s and Longboarding finalists decided, the Open Division Round 1 contestants were let loose on their chase for a first heat win and a ticket to advance to surf again in Round 2 tomorrow.

Bali’s Wayan Suprayitna and Nusa Lembongan’s Angga Mardiana nabbed highest score honors in Round 1, with Suprayitna posting a 6.75 and Mardiana a 6.5.
Judge Made “Sachan” Sudiarta liked what he saw during Round 1, picking out Mardiana, fellow Lembongan boy Agus Frimanto, and Dylan Amar as surfers to watch out for in Round 2, saying “With these kinds of waves it was great to see those boys really committing to big powerful turns on the open face, which I think will see them scoring well tomorrow. I’m excited for tomorrow already, as the swell is expected to pick up a foot or so overnight, which will make for another epic day at Cimaja Beach.”

Cimaja is always a favorite stop on the Coca-Cola ISC tour, as its wave quality and consistency is legendary.  After a free surf session before the contest began, last year’s winner Lee was asked about how the waves were. He replied, “The waves were really fun this morning, and they are shaping up to be pretty much the same this year as last year, which were pretty damn good.  But you have to know which waves are going to be the best ones, and hopefully I’ll be able to do that.”  Does he fancy his chances to be the winner again?  “I never count my chickens man, never.  Just go out there and surf,” he replied with a grin.

The Quiksilver Open West Java was officially opened with a mid morning opening ceremony beachside, while the contest was in progress.  Vice Regent Drs. Ahmad Jajuli and the Head of the West Java Tourism Department Drs. Nunumg Sobari MM both gave speeches and wished the contestants good luck, while promising to continue to support surfing in West Java, which was well received by the audience.

Quiksilver Indonesia had their own opening party on Friday June 8 at the Rolling Stone Café in Jakarta, which started with a press conference and then continued with the launching of Cimaja’s hometown hero and Quiksilver team rider Dede Suryana’s new line of signature boardshorts and T-shirts.  Product giveaways of Quiksilver and Roxy watches, sunglasses and a Freedom Dolly skateboard and boardshorts, coupled with rockin’ live reggae music by Steven Jam had the party going off until midnight.

The swell is expected to increase in size tomorrow for Round 2 of the Men’s Open Division, and the competitors were told to stand by and be ready for action at 8 am.
It promises to be another epic day of non-stop action, so please follow along with us here at the Quiksilver Open West Java 2012 on-line at www.isctour.com/events/quikwestjava and on Facebook at both ISC and Quiksilver Indonesia, and there will be all the up-to-the-minute heat scores and results during the day, then press releases, photos, and video highlights after the day’s competition has ended.

The Quiksilver Open West Java 2012 is sponsored by Quiksilver Indonesia and the Government of West Java, supported by Jim Beam, Planet Surf, BII, Augusta Hotel, Desa Resort, Rolling Stone Café, and Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, with media support from Juice, Trax, FHM, Fitness For Men, Surfersvillage.com, Alam TV Bali, SurfTime, Magic Wave, Baliwaves.com, Balibelly.tv, Lines, RVM, and the Outdoor Channel, and assisted in the Coca-Cola ISC “Go Green” program by GUS, the ROLE Foundation, and Climate Wave.

Rip Curl GromSearch returns to the roots at Padma Beach, Bali this weekend

Rip Curl GromSearch returns to the roots at Padma Beach, Bali this weekend

June 6, 2012

Kuta, Bali, Indonesia – After three successful years at the long cobblestone right point break of Medewi, the Rip Curl GromSearch will return to Padma Beach in Kuta for the Bali leg of the 2012 Rip Curl GromSearch Series on Sunday, June 10.

After scoring incredible – and sometimes heavy – waves and discovering a whole new pack of dedicated groms at the first two GromSearch events of the season in Pacitan, Java and Lakey Peak, Sumbawa, the Rip Curl crew brings the fun to Bali for stop No. 3 of the 2012 Rip Curl Southeast Asia GromSearch Series.

Finda ripping at Lakey Peak.

The Bali GromSearch is always a hotbed of talent and sees the top grom surfers from all over the island, including Kuta, Legian, Uluwatu, Serangan, Nusa Dua, and Keramas, show up to strut their stuff. Last year's Southeast Asia GromSearch Series champion, Ediana Putra, began his journey to Bells Beach and the Rip Curl International GromSearch Final, by qualifying at the Bali GromSearch.

Last year's Bali GromSearch saw a record turnout as some 70 groms signed up for the day’s competition in Medewi. The majority of them came from the Bali area, but there were even some international groms from Australia, Brazil, Hawaii, Portugal, and Sweden. This year keep an eye out for flaring groms like Raju Sena (Padma), Koko Mitsuantara (Nusa Dua) and Tommy Sobri (Pecatu).

The youngsters will be surfing in the footsteps of some amazing surfers who have emerged from Padma's storied sandbars, including Bali surfing legend Made Kasim, original member of the Black Shorts surf crew Ketut Jarut, and brothers Darmaputra and Darmayasa Tonjo.

“Padma is such a good wave for developing your surfing,” Rip Curl team rider Darmaputra Tonjo said. “It can be all types of a wave: left, right, barrel, air section. I'm excited to see how the best grom surfers in Bali perform at my home break on Sunday.”

At stake for the Under-16 groms competing at Padma is the coveted “Ticket to Bali.” The winner and the runner-up in the Under-16 division will receive an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the Rip Curl SEA GromSearch Final, held during the Rip Curl Surf and Music Festival at Kuta Beach, Bali, Oct. 20-21.

The top two regional finishers will also be invited to participate in a week-long Rip Curl GromSearch National Training Camp, the week prior to the National Finals, where they will receive top-notch instruction from Rip Curl's world-class team of professional riders (transportation, lodging, meals and spending money is all provided to the groms courtesy of Rip Curl).

There is no entrance fee for participation in Rip Curl GromSearch events, and all contestants receive a free Rip Curl goody bag, Rip Curl T-shirt and hat. They are also given instruction on environmental issues by local environmental group GUS (Yasasan Gelombang Udara Segar), as well as the chance to participate in fun and educational games, and win cool prizes from the GromSearch sponsors.

Surfers under age 16 can sign up to participate in the GromSearch at any Rip Curl store in Bali or by filling out the online entry form at: www.asia.ripcurl.com/?gromsearch2012-signup

About the Rip Curl GromSearch

Already in its ninth year, Rip Curl’s GromSearch series is the longest running competitive junior surfing series in South East Asia, having started in Bali in 2004. GromSearch has produced several of Indonesia’s best surfers, including 2010 Indonesian Open Champion Putra Hermawan and wunderkind Oney Anwar, the only Indonesian to win an ASP pro junior event, the Dripping Wet Pro Junior 2010 in Sydney Australia.

The Rip Curl GromSearch Series is sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships, and all contestants receive ISC Junior Division Championship points at each event. The Under-16-year-old-surfer with the most points accumulated through all junior events at the end of the year will become the Indonesian Junior Surfing Champion.

The Rip Curl GromSearch series is sponsored by: Beach Hut, Skullcandy, GUS and Shapers, with media support by TRAX Magazine, Alam TV Bali, SurfTime Magazine, Lines Magazine, Magic Wave Surf Community Newspaper, Baliwaves.com, Surfersvillage.com, and Balibelly.tv.
