Competitors Locked In For Upcoming Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali
KERAMAS, Bali/Indonesia (Wednesday, September 26, 2012) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2012 Men's and Women's World Junior Champions will be decided next month at the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali. The ASP's seven regions including: Australasia, Africa, Hawaii, Europe, Japan, North America and South America have used their respective Pro Junior series' to determine their regional representatives at the event who will now battle it out to be the first ASP World Champions crowned in Indonesia.
Andrew Doheny (USA) finished runner-up at this event in Bali last year and will be looking to use his exciting brand of surfing to push for another solid result next month.
"Last year's event was a good experience," Doheny said. "The waves were really fun and I had a great time, doing well in the contest made the trip that much better. I'm really exited to go back and try my best in the contest and get some good surf. I like going to Bali it's always fun times there."
Maxime Huscenot (FRA), 2009 ASP World Junior Champion, will be competing as a junior for the last time at the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali. Husenot's smooth style and competitive experience will see him enter the event as one of the favourites to take it out.
"I'm feeling good and have good boards at the moment," Huscenot said. "I've been working hard lately, I've trained physically since last year and I have a good rhythm going. This is my last opportunity as a junior so I'm going to Bali with hopes of clinching the World Title! I know the wave pretty well and it is very similar to my home wave in Reunion Island."
Rosanny Alvarez (VEN) will be the first surfer from Venezuela to compete at the ASP World Junior Championships after she claimed the prestigious ASP South America Pro Junior title.
"I am very excited to have secured the ASP South American Junior Title, that is unheard of for my country," said Alvarez. "Here in Venezuela we do not have much support for travel and to compete, but the president of the Venezuelan Federation of Surf is seeking sponsorship for me to represent my country for the first time in the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships and I believe everything will be okay. Already I am counting the days traveling to Bali!"
Matt Banting (AUS), the 18-year-old from Port Macquarie, Australia has had a breakthrough year in 2012. Banting started the year with a bang, winning both the Pro Junior and the men's divisions at the prestigious Australian Open Of Surfing and now sits at a very respectable 65th on the ASP Men's World Rankings.
"I watched the World Juniors at Narrabeen for years when I was a grom," Banting said. "I watched guys like Adriano De Souza and Jordy Smith in the finals and it's always been a goal to win one myself. Bali is a great venue! It has a wide variety of waves, great food, great people and the water is warm. My preparation has been good as I've just come off the Europe World Tour leg. It's good to get home, tweak a few things and reset for Bali."
Nao Omura (JPN) who finished equal 5th at last year's Oakley ASP World Junior Championships is looking forward to returning to Bali and competing on the world stage.
"I'm so happy and excited to be in the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships again!" Omura said. "The waves in Bali are always fun, with both barrels and rippable waves. I've been following the ASP Star events because my home doesn't have much waves, and I'm training hard at home for the competition."
The Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali will run from October 6 – 17. For LIVE webcast and event videos and more check www.oakleyprojunior.com

Quiksilver's Kelly Slater Wins 50th ASP Tour Victory

In case anyone in the world missed this news, here is another version of the latest from the world's best professional surfer!

EPIC 50TH ASP TOUR WIN FOR 11-TIME WORLD CHAMPION KELLY SLATER

Huntington Beach, Calif. (September 20, 2012) – Quiksilver’s Kelly Slater made history today by capturing his 50th Elite ASP Tour victory at San Onofre State Beach in Lower Trestles, CA.  Slater, 40, is the first surfer to achieve 50 tour wins, and 11 ASP World Titles, accomplishments spanning two decades of an unparalleled career during which he has dominated competitive surfing as both the youngest and oldest ASP World Champion. Slater’s win today marks special significance as it takes place on the same beach where he took home his 1stworld tour title event 22 yearsago.

In commenting on his 50th tour win, Slater said, “I have to thank the fans – not only today, but over the years. It’s such a blessing to be surfing at Trestles.” Slater continues, “It’s cool to win the 50th here. I won my first event as a pro here, and it’s great to get this win.”

“Kelly’s determination and unrelenting drive as a professional competitor is extraordinary to witness,” said Bob McKnight, CEO of Quiksilver. “After over two decades of watching him conquer countless milestones in professional surfing, we are once again proud and in awe as we watch him win his 50th tour victory. The collective Quiksilver global family joins me in congratulating Kelly!”

Today’s competition started with Slater advancing out of the fifth round of the Hurley Pro over Jeremy Flores. Slater continued surfing at the top of his career beating out Adrian Buchan in the Quarterfinals, and surpassing Mick Fanning in the Semifinals. Slater outstretched remaining contender, Joel Parkinson in the Finals to collect his 50th tour win culminating a 20+year effort.

Quiksilver SEA Congratulates Annissa Flynn, Arif “Mencos” Nurhidayat and Decha Sithidej for their 2012 Asian Surfing Championship Crowns

24 September 2012, Jakarta-Indonesia:  Quiksilver SEA is very proud to congratulate 14 year old Annissa Flynn from Thailand for receiving the 2012 Asian Surfing Championship Women’s Division crown, Arif “Mencos” Nurhidayat from Indonesia for his second consecutive ASC Longboard Division crown, and Decha Sithidej of Thailand for his second ASC Master’s Division crown at the recent Asian Surfing Championship Awards presentation held at Patong Beach in Phuket Thailand on Saturday night September 15th.

Annissa Flynn sealed her 2012 Women’s Championship bid with a Women’s Division win earlier in the day at the 4th annual Quiksilver Open Phuket, after also winning the Grommet (under 16 years of age) division as the sole female competitor in the final.  She has only been surfing for 5 years and has rapidly become a serious competitive surfer, besting women surfers many years her senior.  Flynn competed in all 7 ASC sanctioned events during the 2012 season and won 3 of them, two in Malaysia and the final event in Thailand, and is sponsored by Roxy.

Arif “Mencos” Nurhidayat hails from the small beach town of Batukaras in West Java, Indonesia and is just 23 years old.  He won the Longboard Division of the Quiksilver Open Phuket to earn his second Asian Surfing Championship Longboard title. There were only two longboard events for the 2012 ASC tour season, the first being the Quiksilver Open West Java, and Mencos won both of them with his exciting mix of old school and new school styles.

Decha Sithidej is one of the key figures in the development of Phuket’s surfing community and wins his second ASC Master’s title having competed in but one event during the 2012 ASC season. He competed in two events in Malaysia, one in Indonesia, and the final event in Thailand.  A Patong Beach local, Decha owns Andaman Sea Surf, a surfboard rental business at the beach where the Quiksilver Open is held as well as the Baan Andaman Sea Surf accommodations.

Quiksilver’s Sports Marketing Manager Tipi Jabrik was delighted to have such honor bestowed on three members of his team, saying,“I’m naturally very proud of the achievement of these three surfers, and I love having them on the team.  Not only because they are champions but because they are also great individuals and a very positive example for other surfers in South East Asia.”

He went on to say, “It was especially exciting to have 5-time Women’s World Tour Champion Stephanie Gilmore handing Annissa her trophy and congratulating her. Annissa is well on her way to becoming a world class surfer, and with us supporting and encouraging her she could be joining the world tour someday for sure.”

“Mencos is the most creative and unpredictable longboarder I have ever seen, especially being so young.  Whenever he paddles out you never know what will happen…except that he will be winning the contest.  He is such a great ambassador for Quiksilver as he has a true waterman’s image, so I’m stoked to have him on my team.”

“Decha is such a great example of a surfer helping other surfers.  He is always at the beach, surfing or helping others to surf, spreading the stoke and enjoying life, and still regularly competes in not only the Masters but also the Longboard and Open Divisions.  My congratulations goes to all of them!”

Mega Semadhi Takes Quiksilver Open Phuket Thailand Win and Raditya Rondi Crowned 2012 Asian Surfing Champion

16 September 2012, Patong Beach-Phuket: Topping a long list of highlights in the four days of non-stop surfing and extreme sports action at the Quiksilver Open Phuket Thailand, Bali’s Mega Semadhi took out the ASC/ISC Open Division final yesterday for his first contest win this year, while reigning Men’s Asian Surfing Champion Raditya Rondi (also from Bali, Indonesia) hoisted his second consecutive ASC Championship trophy as a result of his second place finish behind Semadhi.

“I’m feeling so stoked right now,” said Semadhi in his post-final interview.  “Actually I’m so tired of getting second, finally I got a first! Pretty stoked, thanks to God, thanks to everyone, the judges and boys, my family and my fiancĂ©.  So stoked!”

Samadhi takes home a check for $1,700 USD plus Asian Surfing Championship and Indonesian Surfing Championship points that will contribute to his rankings in both circuits.

Ronda, who hails from Kura Beach in Bali, Indonesia was equally stoked with his second consecutive Asian Surfing Championship Men’s Open title, saying, “I’m was so proud to be the first Asian Surfing Champion and now to repeat that and win it again is an even bigger honor, I’m so thankful to my family and my sponsor and my friends for supporting me. Thanks also to the ASC for giving us this tour where we can surf and compete around Asia, and come to awesome places like here in Puget.”

It was a tense and exciting 25 minute Men’s Open final with a lot at stake, especially for Raditya Rondi and Lee Wilson, both in the race for the 2012 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship title with one event remaining. If Wilson were to win the Quiksilver Open Phuket, he would win the 2012 Indonesian Championship title, his 3rd.  Anything less and the title wouldn’t be decided until next month at the final event in Kuta Beach, Bali, with runner up Rondi still smarting from being narrowly edged out by Marlon Gerber last year.

With the crowd on the beach glued to every surfer’s move on every wave coming through in the afternoon sun, Mega jumped out to a commanding lead, consistently launching and landing aerial maneuvers like he was on autopilot.  Both Wilson and Rondi appeared to be feeling the pressure, with Wilson landing an aerial for a 4.5 point score with his first wave and then failing to find anything until near the end of the final, sitting in fourth place for most of the 25 minutes.  Rondi struggled until midway through the heat, when he finally shook off the nerves and banged out a couple of scores to grab 3rd place.  Made Darmayasa meanwhile was sitting comfortably in 2nd spot, feeling no pressure and just having fun.

Then it all came down to the final minutes, when Wilson smashed out a 7.0 score on a left hand runner, which got him up into second place and needing a wave score of only 5.3 points to win the contest.  But with just seconds to go before the horn blew Rondi caught his last wave and blasted away.  Everybody on the beach as well as the finalists waited in anticipation for the MC to call out the score, as Rondi needed better than a 6.0 to get into second place…after about 10 minutes anxiety, the score was announced…a 6.1! So Rondi was up into second place, Wilson down into third place, meaning the Indonesian title will be decided at the final contest of the year in Kuta Beach next month.

Quiksilver SEA CEO Paul Hutson was down on the beach watching the action close up, and couldn’t have been happier.  “Can you believe all the drama in this final, it’s crazy,” he exclaimed.  “The boys were absolutely ripping out there.  Did you hear all the cheering up in the stands and on the beach?  I have to say this is probably the most exciting final with one of the best crowds I’ve seen in a long time.  It’s been a super event for sure…we’ve had some weather challenges along the way but I think that just made it more fun in the end.  We’ve seen great surfing with the best surfers in Asia here this week, great skate and BMX action from the Australian and American DC teams, 5-time Women’s World Surfing Champion Stephanie Gilmore and amazing free surfer Ry Craike giving surf clinics and doing expression session….I can’t think of anything we’ve left out.  Big thanks to Surached and his Quiksilver Thailand team, the sponsors, and the ASC/ISC crew for a super event. We’ve come a long way in four years since we sponsored our first event here in Thailand, and it just keeps getting better.  Great job everyone!”

And it certainly was one of the most exciting as well as challenging events of the 2012 Asian Surfing Championship season, with a few major rain squalls threatening to blow apart the judging tower on several occasions, but there were always waves and the surfers put on exciting and impressive performances over the four day event.

The final day began with Grommet Division (under 16 year old surfers) action, where Phuket’s own wunderkind 14-year old Annissa Flynn from Kata Beach bested the boys to win the division.  She went straight into the Women’s Division and took that win as well, coming into the beach to receive the 2012 Asian Surfing Championship Women’s title!  An amazing feat for a girl that’s only been surfing for 5 years.  From the podium at the evening awards presentation after receiving the trophy from Quiksilver’s Stephanie Gilmore, she said, “I’m so happy, I can’t tell you how happy I am to win this title.  It’s like insane that in 5 years I’m now the Asian champion!”

Gilmore complemented Flynn saying, “I think this is a really special moment for Thailand, to have a local Thai champion.  It’s an amazing award for you, to beat the boys and the girls! She added “Thanks to Quiksilver and all of their team, and everyone who has put their time and effort into such a wonderful event.  This is my first time to Thailand and I’m so impressed, everybody’s been so welcoming, and I’m really looking forward to coming back here soon.  Congratulations!”

Other highlights of the day included Bali’s Wayan “Cupak” Widiarta winning the Masters Division and Arip “Mencos” Nurhidayat and Luke Landrigan going head to head in the Longboard Division with Mencos coming out on top and winning his 2nd consecutive ASC Longboard title.

While the surfing was going on, celebrity surf lessons were given by Ry Craike and Stephanie Gilmore and the DC Tour skate and BMX teams were wowing the spectators on the sidewalk with their radical moves like jumping over motorbikes, doing flips and all kinds of other tricks.

The full day ended with the awards presentations held in the Phuket Graceland Hotel, as the beachside venue that had been prepared was awash with torrential rain and howling winds, so everything had to be moved indoors.  With plenty of food and copious amounts of Chang beer at the ready, nobody was disappointed in the least.

Second Annual Put Up or Shut Up/Source to the Sea One-Day Winner-Take-All Surf Tournament Presented by Coca-Cola ISC and Surftime Magazine Sails to Grajagan for Huge September 6 Swell

3 September 2012, Kuta-Bali: The Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships and Surftime Magazine are very excited to announce the date and location of the most no-holds-barred, charge-every-wave-like-it’s-the-last-one-on-earth, go-deeper-and stay-in-longer, one-day free-surfing tournament ever created.

East Java’s legendary Grajagan “G-Land” Bay will be the host of the second annual Put Up or Shut Up event on September 6th as the swell is forecast to reach a solid 10 feet (over 3 meters) at 16 second intervals, setting up an ultimate day of surf for the 10 lucky particpants who will depart Bali by boat for Grajagan in the early morning hours of September 5th.

From a lengthy list of invitees that includes the top international and Indonesian surfers, only 10 will be chosen to throw a million Indonesian rupiah of their own money into the ceremonial Put Up or Shut Up Trophy bowl. At the end of what promises to be a most inspiring day of free-surfing at the world famous barrel factory of G-Land, one surfer will pocket all the cash in a winner take all victory and inscribe his or her name on the perpetual Put Up or Shut Up trophy.

There is only one rule in this very unique tournament: Surfers must perform at their absolute best. It is not a conventional contest by any definition, but a winner-take-all tournament where the surfers put their money up and bet on themselves to best the day.

There is no point system. No judges, no scaffolding, no banners, no horns, no hassle, no sanction fees, no clearing of the water. It is a simply a gathering of the best. The surfers will surf all day in a real life setting. It is entirely up to each surfer to pick when they want to surf and for how long over one entire day in epic conditions.

One man will decide the champion of the tournament, and that man is Matt George, Editor-in-Chief of Surftime Magazine. The decision will be based solely on his experienced opinion. After the day of surfing is finished, he alone will select the surfer whom he feels put on the best performance and award the prize money and the trophy.

Last year it was Hawaii’s Jamie O’Brien who took top honors in a thriller held in Bali, with a morning session at Keramas and an afternoon climax at Padang-Padang. Who will it be this year? Here is a partial list of invitees:

International: Jamie O’Brien, Kelly Slater, Jordy Smith , Rob Machado, Mick Fanning, Billy Pippen Oscar Wright, Owen Wright, Chris Ward, Dane Reynolds, Bruce Irons, Taj Burrow, Mikala Jones, Flynn Novak, Jesse Merle Jones, Laird Hamilton, Gerry Lopez, Peter McCabe, Christian Fletcher, Nathan Fletcher, Tai Graham, Adam Bennetts, Tucker McGrath, and Teiki Mathieu Balian.

A very special invitee will be Miss Alissa Martens, whose courage and big wave reputation has earned her a position in the tournament line-up. As the sole female invitee, she no doubt serves as an inspiration to all female athletes around the globe.

The special honorary invitee is Andy Irons, a three-time World Champion who was tragically lost to the sport in November of 2010

Indonesian Invitees: Dede Suryana, Mustofa Jeksen, Tipi Jabrik, Made “Bol” Adi Putra, Made Kasim, Ketut Menda, Marlon Gerber, Lee Wilson, Wayan Robot Susiana , Made Garut Widiarta, Raditya Rondi, Dedi Gun, Reef Axel Doig, Andre Anwar, Pepen Hendrik, Made Lana, Rizal Tanjung, and Wayan "Gobleg" Suyadnya.

THE SOURCE TO THE SEA PROYEK

In addition to the hard core surfing action that will be seen on the day, a new environmental initiative has been added to the Put Up or Shut Up agenda called Source to the Sea. Before the surfers take to the water, a ceremony will be held where they all sign an environmental manifesto declaring their commitment and resolve to help clean up Indonesia’s waterways… from the “Source to the Sea”.

This will also serve as their personal vow to participate in a very special river cleanup project where they will all roll up their sleeves to pitch in and help clean up an Indonesian waterway in need, helping to raise awareness of the importance of clean Indonesian waterways and a cleaner ocean.

At the conclusion of the clean-up effort, all the surfers will particpate in a ceremony of thanks to the waters that provide life, as well as to the ocean for the waves she provides. Following the ceremony the surfers will paddle out into the ocean for a dynamic “Expression Session” that will be a highlight of the short film of the Put Up Or Shut Up/Source To The Sea project.

Partners particpating in this great environmental effort are the Coca-Cola ISC, Surftime, Yayasan GUS, Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu and Yayasan Regenerating Bali.

Speaking on behalf of both the Coca-Cola ISC and SurfTime, SurfTime Editor-in-Chief Matt George, explained the core reason for putting on such a specialty event, “This is Coca-Cola ISC and Surftime demonstrating our committment to Indonesian surfing and to our resolve to protect the magnificent environment that we all share together. The spirit of this tournament is mainly one of thanks for the friends we have, the blessings of the ocean and the extraordinary world we live in”.
