Second Annual Put Up or Shut Up/Source to the Sea One-Day Winner-Take-All Surf Tournament Presented by Coca-Cola ISC and Surftime Magazine Sails to Grajagan for Huge September 6 Swell

3 September 2012, Kuta-Bali: The Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships and Surftime Magazine are very excited to announce the date and location of the most no-holds-barred, charge-every-wave-like-it’s-the-last-one-on-earth, go-deeper-and stay-in-longer, one-day free-surfing tournament ever created.

East Java’s legendary Grajagan “G-Land” Bay will be the host of the second annual Put Up or Shut Up event on September 6th as the swell is forecast to reach a solid 10 feet (over 3 meters) at 16 second intervals, setting up an ultimate day of surf for the 10 lucky particpants who will depart Bali by boat for Grajagan in the early morning hours of September 5th.

From a lengthy list of invitees that includes the top international and Indonesian surfers, only 10 will be chosen to throw a million Indonesian rupiah of their own money into the ceremonial Put Up or Shut Up Trophy bowl. At the end of what promises to be a most inspiring day of free-surfing at the world famous barrel factory of G-Land, one surfer will pocket all the cash in a winner take all victory and inscribe his or her name on the perpetual Put Up or Shut Up trophy.

There is only one rule in this very unique tournament: Surfers must perform at their absolute best. It is not a conventional contest by any definition, but a winner-take-all tournament where the surfers put their money up and bet on themselves to best the day.

There is no point system. No judges, no scaffolding, no banners, no horns, no hassle, no sanction fees, no clearing of the water. It is a simply a gathering of the best. The surfers will surf all day in a real life setting. It is entirely up to each surfer to pick when they want to surf and for how long over one entire day in epic conditions.

One man will decide the champion of the tournament, and that man is Matt George, Editor-in-Chief of Surftime Magazine. The decision will be based solely on his experienced opinion. After the day of surfing is finished, he alone will select the surfer whom he feels put on the best performance and award the prize money and the trophy.

Last year it was Hawaii’s Jamie O’Brien who took top honors in a thriller held in Bali, with a morning session at Keramas and an afternoon climax at Padang-Padang. Who will it be this year? Here is a partial list of invitees:

International: Jamie O’Brien, Kelly Slater, Jordy Smith , Rob Machado, Mick Fanning, Billy Pippen Oscar Wright, Owen Wright, Chris Ward, Dane Reynolds, Bruce Irons, Taj Burrow, Mikala Jones, Flynn Novak, Jesse Merle Jones, Laird Hamilton, Gerry Lopez, Peter McCabe, Christian Fletcher, Nathan Fletcher, Tai Graham, Adam Bennetts, Tucker McGrath, and Teiki Mathieu Balian.

A very special invitee will be Miss Alissa Martens, whose courage and big wave reputation has earned her a position in the tournament line-up. As the sole female invitee, she no doubt serves as an inspiration to all female athletes around the globe.

The special honorary invitee is Andy Irons, a three-time World Champion who was tragically lost to the sport in November of 2010

Indonesian Invitees: Dede Suryana, Mustofa Jeksen, Tipi Jabrik, Made “Bol” Adi Putra, Made Kasim, Ketut Menda, Marlon Gerber, Lee Wilson, Wayan Robot Susiana , Made Garut Widiarta, Raditya Rondi, Dedi Gun, Reef Axel Doig, Andre Anwar, Pepen Hendrik, Made Lana, Rizal Tanjung, and Wayan "Gobleg" Suyadnya.

THE SOURCE TO THE SEA PROYEK

In addition to the hard core surfing action that will be seen on the day, a new environmental initiative has been added to the Put Up or Shut Up agenda called Source to the Sea. Before the surfers take to the water, a ceremony will be held where they all sign an environmental manifesto declaring their commitment and resolve to help clean up Indonesia’s waterways… from the “Source to the Sea”.

This will also serve as their personal vow to participate in a very special river cleanup project where they will all roll up their sleeves to pitch in and help clean up an Indonesian waterway in need, helping to raise awareness of the importance of clean Indonesian waterways and a cleaner ocean.

At the conclusion of the clean-up effort, all the surfers will particpate in a ceremony of thanks to the waters that provide life, as well as to the ocean for the waves she provides. Following the ceremony the surfers will paddle out into the ocean for a dynamic “Expression Session” that will be a highlight of the short film of the Put Up Or Shut Up/Source To The Sea project.

Partners particpating in this great environmental effort are the Coca-Cola ISC, Surftime, Yayasan GUS, Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu and Yayasan Regenerating Bali.

Speaking on behalf of both the Coca-Cola ISC and SurfTime, SurfTime Editor-in-Chief Matt George, explained the core reason for putting on such a specialty event, “This is Coca-Cola ISC and Surftime demonstrating our committment to Indonesian surfing and to our resolve to protect the magnificent environment that we all share together. The spirit of this tournament is mainly one of thanks for the friends we have, the blessings of the ocean and the extraordinary world we live in”.
