Quiksilver SEA Congratulates Annissa Flynn, Arif “Mencos” Nurhidayat and Decha Sithidej for their 2012 Asian Surfing Championship Crowns

24 September 2012, Jakarta-Indonesia:  Quiksilver SEA is very proud to congratulate 14 year old Annissa Flynn from Thailand for receiving the 2012 Asian Surfing Championship Women’s Division crown, Arif “Mencos” Nurhidayat from Indonesia for his second consecutive ASC Longboard Division crown, and Decha Sithidej of Thailand for his second ASC Master’s Division crown at the recent Asian Surfing Championship Awards presentation held at Patong Beach in Phuket Thailand on Saturday night September 15th.

Annissa Flynn sealed her 2012 Women’s Championship bid with a Women’s Division win earlier in the day at the 4th annual Quiksilver Open Phuket, after also winning the Grommet (under 16 years of age) division as the sole female competitor in the final.  She has only been surfing for 5 years and has rapidly become a serious competitive surfer, besting women surfers many years her senior.  Flynn competed in all 7 ASC sanctioned events during the 2012 season and won 3 of them, two in Malaysia and the final event in Thailand, and is sponsored by Roxy.

Arif “Mencos” Nurhidayat hails from the small beach town of Batukaras in West Java, Indonesia and is just 23 years old.  He won the Longboard Division of the Quiksilver Open Phuket to earn his second Asian Surfing Championship Longboard title. There were only two longboard events for the 2012 ASC tour season, the first being the Quiksilver Open West Java, and Mencos won both of them with his exciting mix of old school and new school styles.

Decha Sithidej is one of the key figures in the development of Phuket’s surfing community and wins his second ASC Master’s title having competed in but one event during the 2012 ASC season. He competed in two events in Malaysia, one in Indonesia, and the final event in Thailand.  A Patong Beach local, Decha owns Andaman Sea Surf, a surfboard rental business at the beach where the Quiksilver Open is held as well as the Baan Andaman Sea Surf accommodations.

Quiksilver’s Sports Marketing Manager Tipi Jabrik was delighted to have such honor bestowed on three members of his team, saying,“I’m naturally very proud of the achievement of these three surfers, and I love having them on the team.  Not only because they are champions but because they are also great individuals and a very positive example for other surfers in South East Asia.”

He went on to say, “It was especially exciting to have 5-time Women’s World Tour Champion Stephanie Gilmore handing Annissa her trophy and congratulating her. Annissa is well on her way to becoming a world class surfer, and with us supporting and encouraging her she could be joining the world tour someday for sure.”

“Mencos is the most creative and unpredictable longboarder I have ever seen, especially being so young.  Whenever he paddles out you never know what will happen…except that he will be winning the contest.  He is such a great ambassador for Quiksilver as he has a true waterman’s image, so I’m stoked to have him on my team.”

“Decha is such a great example of a surfer helping other surfers.  He is always at the beach, surfing or helping others to surf, spreading the stoke and enjoying life, and still regularly competes in not only the Masters but also the Longboard and Open Divisions.  My congratulations goes to all of them!”
